About the Author
Bobby Fischer (March 9, 1943 – January 17, 2008) is regarded as the greatest chess player the world has ever known. He won the US Open Championship at age 13, the US Championship at age 14, became a grandmaster and a candidate for the World Chess Championship at age 15, and defeated Boris Spassky in an epic battle for the World Chess Championship in Reykjavik, Iceland in 1972. In this book, he describes and fully annotates his battles on the way to the top. This book is widely regarded as the best chess book ever written.

A suppressed masterpiece.

Readers should be aware that there have been several editions of this book. In its original form, in descriptive notation and with Fischer's own annotations, it was very well received indeed, earning high praise from many top players and chess writers. It was also voted the best chess book in any category by the readers of the British Chess Magazine, and I'm sure by others.
Unfortunately, when it was later re-edited and issued in an algebraic edition, something happened to Fischer's original annotations. The editors apparently 'revised' them, and the effect was - as Fischer vehemently complained in a recent radio interview - to make him look like "a patzer." He claims that the new annotations are riddled with errors and could never have come from his hand.
Since 'My 60 Memorable Games' is as about important to students of chess as Shakespeare's plays are to students of literature, it would be nice to be able to tell readers to avoid the mutilated algebraic edition and to make sure they get a reprint of the earlier and untampered-with edition of the book. Unhappily neither edition appears to be available. Both have been allowed to go out of print and remain out of print.
One is left wondering just who is keeping this masterpiece off the market. And why...?

The Book and I

When I first decided on aquiring this literary masterpiece, I was quite under the impression that there would be a higher annotation:move ratio. I was wrong, but perhaps that is a good thing.

There is a plethora of chess enlightenment within the pages. Knowledge isn't spoon-fed to you, as in many lower-level books, but there are excellent annotations which let us peek into the mind of a chess legend. A chess legend whom, if you are reading this page, you probably adore.

The games are ones which Bobby Fischer considers memorable, so therefore they must be pretty great, right? They are!

Still, as I mentioned, the annotations aren't spoon-fed to you, so you won't be getting anything out of simply playing over the moves really quickly and glancing at the annotations. You actually have to sit in front of Fischer's opponent and contemplate the moves through Fischer's eyes.

C.S.Purdy once said,"If the student forces himself to examine all moves that smite, however absurd they may look at first glance, he is on the way to becoming a master of tactics."

I quote him, because, a lot of Fischer's moves come out of nowhere. When going over Bobby's games in endeavor to guess which move comes next, calculating the bizarre moves is beneficial.

It's an excellent book if you are a dedicated chess player. Casual chess players won't get nearly as much out of it. In other words, if chess is your hobby, you won't get as much out of it. If chess is your life, then stop reading customer reviews, and just go ahead and purchase the book!

Reading this book made me a fan!

First I would like to state this is not the infamous 1995 Batsford release that infuriated Bobby Fischer. This 2009 copy puts all that scandal in the past and lets a new generation enjoy this great book in the language spoken by most players algerbraic notation. The previous alterations in the 1995 edition have been omitted making this a faithful reproduction of a great work. Mostly grammatical errors and misspellings have been corrected. I happen to own this book and compared it to with the alterations stated by Mr. Winter in his article Fischer's Fury and this new issue holds true. Only one alteration was made that is the game Fischer - Tal Candidates Tournament 1959. Fischer in his original book gives (50.....Ba1 when Bobby could have won with 51. Rc8+) instead the correct move made actually in the game 50....Kc7. Fischer in a interview for a chess magazine states at the last minute before the book hit the printing press he caught the error, he attached a note but fell off. Making this an updated copy.

Before reading this book I disdained studying any Fischer games because I believed he couldn't have been a good player for dropping out of competitive chess. Reading this book completely changed my opinion now I consider him my favorite chess player of all time. What makes this game collection so good it was written by Fischer himself. No chess writer can give you a better insight than the man who actually played the games. Fischer's commentary to his games is refreshing bringing his games to life with humor, brutal honesty and humbleness often stating where he made mistakes and could have played better. It shows Bobby's genius to remember the emotional and phycological ups and downs to his games played years before henceforth the title. You also cant beat the annotations they come strait from the mind of one of history's greatest chess artist. You wont be bored here Fisher gives a healthy amount of notes usually at key moments in the games as opposed to other chess writers who leave the reader confused with an extreme amount of notes with no value. Fischer's games are absolutley beautiful I doubt there are many readers who will disagree. This is a must have for any chess reader with any amount of good taste.

Grade 1-3-This worthy title uses familiar examples and a clear focus to introduce basic scientific concepts. An opening scene shows children playing ball, flying kites, and cooking and eating hot dogs, with a rock on a hill in the background. Bradley explains that inherent in the scenarios are different kinds of energy. She then tells how the kite uses the wind, the rock converts stored energy into moving energy, and so on, and discusses how the greatest source of power, the sun, makes food, fossil fuels, light, heat, and wind. The author intentionally makes this a very general introduction; not even moderately difficult words such as "potential" or "kinetic" are used. A simple experiment and a game are appended. While rolling a toy car into a stationary one and observing the result can be easily done, tracing energy back to the sun will probably need adult guidance. Meisel's color illustrations of cheerful multiethnic children match the level and tone of the text perfectly, make it more comprehensible, and add to the book's appeal. While educational theorists believe that children can't grasp abstractions until at least age seven, younger readers will gain some familiarity with the concept even if they don't really understand it. Larry White's Energy: Simple Experiments for Young Scientists (Millbrook, 1995) offers a more sophisticated and detailed introduction, along with many experiments, for older readers, but Bradley's title is a good first exposure to the subject.

Gr 1-3. This entry in the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science series explains the concept of energy and how it is used. The organization may be confusing: children don't find out until near the end of the book that most of our energy comes from the sun. But some kids will be intrigued by the way the book builds to this information and will keep reading to find out more. The book begins with cartoon-style illustrations showing people playing and working at different activities, all of which, of course, require energy. The text, which includes information about the fueling of both objects and people, goes on to explain that energy gives both heat and light, that all activities require energy, and that energy can be transferred from one thing to another. Appealing art and easily understandable explanations make this a good basis for teaching beginning science principles. Ilene Cooper

Paul Meisel has illustrated many books for children, including Why Are the Ice Caps Melting?, Energy Makes Things Happen, and What Happens to Our Trash? in the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science series. He lives in Newtown, Connecticut.

Great science book for kids about energy

I really like the "Let's Read and Find out Science 2" series. These are great science books for elementary school and they are perfect for my first grader. They use familiar examples to introduce basic scientific concepts in a simple but fun way. They are interesting for both kids and adults. I have found them to be a valuable tool to teach these concepts to my kids.

More books just like this please!

I bought this book as well as Forces Make Things Move for use in an engineering class I did for kindergartners/first graders and they were both fabulous. The author does a great job of distilling complicated ideas into simple easy to understand concepts, which is NOT an easy feat. The kids had no trouble understanding the ideas as presented and even the adults present learned some new things. The illustrations are engaging and well-done. I would happily buy anything else from this author and highly recommend these both!

My 6-year-old son has this book and loves to read it! Also, we have 5 others from this series and would like to purchase more - they are that good!! I'm learning all kinds of things from these books as well! We highly recommend and give as gifts to other kids too.

Susan Belasco (BA, Baylor University; PhD, Texas A&M University), professor of English and women's studies at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, has taught courses in writing and American literature at several institutions since 1974, including McLennan Community College; Allegheny College; California State University, Los Angeles; and the University of Tulsa. The editor of Margaret Fuller's Summer on the Lakes and Fanny Fern's Ruth Hall, she is also the coeditor of three collections of essays: Approaches to Teaching Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin"; Periodical Literature in Nineteenth-Century America; and Leaves of Grass: The Sesquicentennial Essays. The editor of "Walt Whitman's Periodical Poetry" for the Walt Whitman Archive (whitmanarchive.org), she is the current president of the Research Society for American Periodicals. Linck Johnson (BA, Cornell University; PhD, Princeton University), the Charles A. Dana Professor of English at Colgate University, has taught courses in writing and American literature and culture since 1974. He is the author of Thoreau's Complex Weave: The Writing of "A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers," with the Text of the First Draft, the Historical Introduction to A Week in the Princeton University Press edition of The Writings of Henry D. Thoreau, and numerous articles and contributions to books. Oscar Wilde (16 October 1854 - 30 November 1900) was an extremely popular Irish writer and poet who wrote in different forms throughout his career and became one of London's most popular playwrights in the early 1890s. Oscar Wilde (1854 1900) was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland. Wilde studied at Trinity College in Dublin and at Magdalen College in Oxford, England, before settling down in London and having a long, successful career as a poet, playwright, and author. Wilde is best known for his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray and for his satirical play The Importance of Being Earnest.

Different

The average work about socialism talks about such dry topics as economics and politics. This essay doesn't do any of that. It goes into art, and even pseudo-psychology (one could say). It covers a broad variety of topics in a short amount of pages. I agree with almost everything said in this book. It's definitely worth reading and will really make you think.

You will have to read it more than once.

First: Oscar Wilde is one of my favorite writers of fiction and my very favorite poet. This work at first reading had too many contradictions, so I read it again in its entirety. I got the real gist of it when I reread portions of it several more times. He has expertly dotted qualifiers in his praises of Socialism. I missed the qualifiers which gave rise to the seeming contradictions. Wilde praises Socialism for pages and pages, but quietly qualifies that his praise is for socialism as a very highly desirable but very highly personal system (close to the soul) to go no further than the boundaries of your own family. Take that socialist family structure beyond that boundary and you will have nothing but conflict, discontent, dissatisfaction, etc. Socialism is TOTALLY unworkable beyond self and/or family. Wilde saw it. Now I see what he saw. Read it carefully.

Trenchant Defense of Individual Rights

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Oscar Wilde's polemic is the way in which it summarizes many of the themes explored in his better-known fictional work. In THE SOUL OF MAN UNDER SOCIALISM he calls for the creation of a socialist state in which class-differences simply do not exist: everyone has the chance to pursue their own dreams in a completely free environment. In such a world social pressures are no longer relevant; because everyone is equal, they no longer envy one another, and possessions assume minimal significance. Government - of the kind understood in Victorian Britain, where the monied classes assume automatic power over the less advantaged - can be abandoned in favor of a more egalitarian system in which everyone has the chance to assume equal authority.

Such proposals (as other reviewers have remarked) might seem idealistic - even unworkable - but they are part of Wilde's continuing criticism of a society where the aristocrats automatically believed in their right to govern, even if they had no idea how to practice it. Privilege led to arrogance, and this helped to sustain the inequalities that were endemic to Victorian Britain. Wilde also understood the evils of capitalism: although Britain liked to represent itself as "the workshop of the world," its status was founded on inequality, where the masses worked for minimal wages in filthy conditions, while the factory-owners got richer and richer as a result. A truly socialist state would serve to eliminate such class-differences; instead, everyone would learn how to work together for the common good.

But Wilde's true sphere of interest lies in the cultivation of the imagination, or the soul, as he terms it. In contemporary Britain most people have neither the chance nor the inclination to develop themselves spiritually, to consider the beauties of the universe, as they have to spend most of their time trying to make ends meet. In a truly socialist society, where everyone was happy, more time and opportunity would be provided for contemplation, to understand the true nature of beauty and thereby develop the imaginative faculties. This could only lead to the enrichment of society as a whole. Wilde understands how romantic poets such as Shelley, Byron and Coleridge managed to achieve this state of mind in the past; but they had the financial and social opportunities to pursue their interests. Wilde wants that privilege to be extended to everyone.

THE SOUL OF MAN UNDER SOCIALISM might seem somewhat idealistic, but in terms of Victorian history it can be read as a trenchant critique of capitalism and associated iniquities such as colonialism and exploitation. Wilde believed that everyone should be given true freedom of expression, something he himself was denied later on in the 1890s (THE SOUL OF MAN APPEARED in 1891), when he was arrested for so-called "debauched" practices. The way in which he was treated by the British authorities only served to emphasize the importance of his demands, as expressed in this work.

Jakob's POV and certain unanswered questions from prior books in series are answered. We discover Jakob's upbringing and his real intentions for Bianka's.
You want to despise and love him all at the same time. I'm for team Jakob!!!!!

an absolutely outstanding and highly entertaining series that has kept me on the edge of my seat!

Masquerade is a wonderfully intimate and highly charged view of Jakob’s perspective from his part in the delightfully complex mystery that surrounds Bianca London and the people of Bradley, Inc. There is never a dull moment in the action, and we find that the twists and turns are always in a state of constant flux. Not even Jakob is able to keep up with all of the players and their shifting roles. This causes the danger levels to increase exponentially and his list of trusted individuals to dwindle down to one surprising person – Bianca. No one is as they seem, and the stakes are rising higher with each passing second.

Jakob is not an innocent bystander. He has his own sinister plan set in motion to expose the person who he believes Bianca to be. What he doesn’t understand is his unwanted yet uncontrollable pull to her. The closer he gets to her the most confused he becomes as his previous judgement doesn’t line up with what he continues to find out about her. One thing is true, he will stop at nothing to find out the truth about Bianca. However, he must understand that no man can control every aspect of their lives. Somewhere along the way, his control will slip and he may just find himself at the mercy of another.

I knew that Jakob was never who he claimed to be. He was dangerous and ruthless, and yet for all of his power, he was helpless when it came to Bianca. It was her genuinely good heart that won him over and showed him that no everyone was out to get him. While she was a pawn in a deadly game of chess, she showed him that she was not her parents. What I loved was that the vulnerability that he kept tightly hidden was slowly exposed at her obvious innocent nature. He couldn’t help that he truly wanted to protect her more than he wanted to destroy her. Something about her called to him in a way that no other woman besides his mother ever had. She was different, special, and meant for only him. However, no matter the power and force of their attraction, neither would truly open their hearts to the other for fear of losing more than they could ever afford to give.

J. S. Cooper has created an absolutely outstanding and highly entertaining series that has kept me on the edge of my seat! I can’t get enough of this highly complex storyline and this eclectic cast of such incredible characters. I am counting down the days until the last book of this series is out and we finally are able to see just how deep the rabbit hole goes. This is a highly addictive and brutally wicked suspense series that will leave your head spinning and your senses in overload.

Oh Jakob... what are you up to?? That is the question everyone wants to know right?? What has spun in Jakobs live to have him where he is now. Well Masquerade gives us that up close and personal pre island view of Jakob. It is such a great insight as to what he is thinking and what his plan is. Do we know all the answers? NO! Do we understand him a bit more? YES! Do I still love him so very much?!?? YES!!! I cannot wait for Resolution when everything is said and done and we finally get all our answers but until then this was a nice treat to see what some of his motives are... It turns out Jakob isn't necessarily the man we thought he was... Who am I kidding I have no idea what kind of man he is except HOT!
