About the Author
Bhanu Kapil has written four full-length prose/poetry works, THE VERTICAL INTERROGATION OF STRANGERS (Kelsey Street Press, 2001), INCUBATION: A SPACE FOR MONSTERS (Leon Works, 2006), HUMANIMAL: A PROJECT FOR FUTURE CHILDREN (Kelsey Street Press, 2009), and SCHIZOPHRENE (Nightboat Books, 2011). Born in the UK to Indian parents, Bhanu lives in Colorado, where she teaches in The Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University.

Schizophrene--another great book from Bhanu Kapil!

I have unexpectedly become a fan of Kapil's books these last years. One enters each through revisitation. Her texts are like places--you arrive as a foreigner, hesitant, seeing the unusual, the unexpected, but you continue to explore and reread lines and paragraphs and pages until you fall in love and feel at home in the world she has made for you.

Kapil's works have an immediate poetic draw where one encounters dazziling lines like "It's already late. A black world coming down from the heavens. Black with stars."(p9, Schizophrene) A few pages get read over and over again, and then you are hooked. There is something hard to explain about how her works connect--they feel at once dense and loose.

At work is collage, lines and spaces between those lines. As she writes: "When it's rotted to the bone, the paper is covered with metallic fur, which is not paper. 'It was a contemporary voice that had the same power as a foundational voice.' No. It's a first line, then a second, the fragments overlapping with a visceral sound, where the pages stick. I unstick them to see. To read." ((p58, Schizophrene)

We, too, as readers, unstick these pages, see and read, feel the visceral, the unexpected violence in parts, the beauty also in others.

And with this short work, Schizophrene, there is also a curious transparency of process--beginning with "Passive Notes" which introduces this book, speaking transparently about what the author had wanted and how what is here came about through failure and rebeginnings--and closing with her "acknowledgements and quick notes" which again reveals process by revealing encounters both artistic and educational (things learned, from whom) which helped this book come to be.

For anyone interested in montage, collage, books of place, of journey, of language, books which are looking at the foreigner and a sense of home or estrangement--this is for you. It is delicate and fierce, and though small, is large in its scope and is magnified by its own need to be read and read again. Schizophrene, like Kapil's body of work, is a correspondance with its readers, opening in them new spaces of langauge.

Boot camp at Parris Island was both mundane and exciting. But at times it was outrageous and senseless in ways few would believe. This book goes beyond popular image into the sometimes brutal but often comical world of turning greenhorn recruits into newly minted Marines as it existed nearly 40 years ago.
I went through Marine boot camp during the mid-1970s, immediately after the end of the Vietnam War, a time when the cherished traditions and hallowed myths of Marine recruit training became warped and perverted, making what had always been a demanding experience even more harrowing. (It was also a time when the military’s image was at low ebb in this country. I was promptly labeled a loser by many of my high school friends when they learned of my choice to enlist.) I entered Marine basic training as a naive, timid adolescent who had dreamed of the military life, but fantasy quickly collided with reality on Parris Island. There were times when I doubted I would survive to the end, but I endured through sheer, stubborn determination and by drawing on a well of mental strength I hadn’t known I had.
Those 16 weeks on Parris Island changed me. It may sound trite, but the Marine Corps turned a boy into a man. Boot camp became the formative experience of my life, a wedge that separated all that came before from what followed.
This book is in a way a piece of history: The very abuses I describe led to congressional investigations and wholesale changes in the training regimen at the Marine recruit depots within months of my graduation, a process I describe in the epilogue. Marine boot camp today, while still a rigorous experience, only remotely resembles the training I underwent. Mine was a truly an end-of-an-era experience, a story never to be told again.

been there done that

Being a retired Marine, I found the book hard to put down once I started reading it. While the author went through boot camp at PI and I in San Diego, I found many similarities.

It brought back memories of a different time and place.

It was great...

I would not hesitate to recommend this book to anyone who was familiar with USMC bootcamp as the stories bring back your own memories of your time on the island. I am not sure that it would be appreciated outside of this audience.

This is a very personal book about this recruits journey through boot camp. He makes the usual knocks about boot camp today versus when he was in...blah blah but honestly the same stuff happened 15 years later when I arrived at the island. He was "Old Corps" in other words.

It was a fun read and did not take but a few hours to get through. If you are looking for a literary masterpiece save your 5 bucks. This is just a fun read.

A prospective reader might think he knows what to expect in this story of a young teenager going through Parris Island. But he'll be surprised when he reads this book. Hollywood's portrayal can't even come close to the reality. To understand the real experience, you will have to read this book. Or go through Parris Island yourself. I heartily recommend this book.

About the Author
Daniel P. Horan, O.F.M., a Franciscan friar of Holy Name Province, has taught in the department of religious studies at Siena College near Albany, New York. He currently serves on the board of directors of the International Thomas Merton Society and has published more than thirty articles and book chapters. His article in Spiritual Life, "Digital Natives and Franciscan Spirituality,"earned a first-place 2011 award from the Catholic Press Association. He writes regularly at the blog DatingGod.org.

Dating God: Live and Love in the Way of St. Francis

As a leadership consultant I found this book to be immensely rewarding to read. As we are seeing world wide, there is a shift in leadership relationships. For far too long we have looked at leaders as good parents-which has resulted in an unhealthy dependency on the part of followers. In addition, when the good parent does not "protect" us from the unpredictability of life, we grow angry and often denigrate that same person we had previously admired. This book helps to articulate a relationship with God that is truly one where we bring our true and adult self into relationship with God. Through this book we begin to see a relationship with God in which our voice is important. God does not only command us to be- he also lovingly listens to us as we search for the fullest expression of our true self in relationship with others. I am thankful for this book on many levels, but most importantly this book provides a beautiful description of a rich, mutually respectful, mutually loving relationship with God. One that is becoming more necessary as the world begins to recognize the interdependency of each person and each country throughout the world.

Hermitage experience

Daniel P. Horan, O.F.M., is a Franciscan Friar who has published numerous articles, led retreats, and lectured across the U.S. and Europe. In Dating God he compares the human experience of establishing a close relationship with another person to that of developing greater knowledge and understanding of our Creator. Dating God is divided into eight chapters consisting of reflections on Franciscan spirituality, personal observations, a list of points to remember and reflection questions.

For example, in the "Making a Date with God" chapter, Horan discusses solitude in the context of a hermitage experience he shared with his classmates while in the novitiate. The event took place in eastern Pennsylvania in the middle of winter. For 10 days, the novices would spend 23 hours a day in solitude, praying, reading in their cells, or walking in the woods. Each evening they spent an hour together, attending Mass and eating dinner. The retreat was designed to allow the novices to set aside time and space for solitude with God as their companion.

Horan admits that as an extrovert he found the prospect scary. His first reaction was one of isolation that reminded him of solitary confinement or the childhood punishment of "time out." He recalls the old question of a tree falling in the forest when no one was around to hear--did it fall? At the hermitage, with no Facebook or Twitter, no one to speak to him, did he actually exist?

Initially Horan tried to distract himself with reading, then walking in the woods where, he writes, he rediscovered the connections within all of God's creation. The experience was similar to that of seeing on old friend after a long separation. This friend was God, and for Horan, it seemed like a date. Though he felt awkward at first, he soon realized that his presence was all that God desired. He writes of a form of transcendence that occurred as he walked among and as part of creation with his Creator. Reflection questions for this chapter address the difference between being lonely and being alone; finding time for silence and solitude; and creating a hermitage experience amid the demands of ordinary life.

Fantastic Read

This book is great for anyone looking to bring new life into their relationship with God. While the metaphor of "dating" God would seem strange at first, Horan connects all the dots and gives us a great way to understand our relationship with God. I especially enjoyed all the stories from the lives of Franciscan saints and stories from the author's own life. Horan weaves these stories together seamlessly, creating a cohesive and easy read for all to enjoy. As a Campus Minister at a Franciscan University, I look forward to sharing this book with my students and helping them understand their own relationship with God and with others.

About the Author
Dr. James D. Hernando's broad teaching experience encompasses public and undergraduate, as well as graduate levels of education. He has been a contributing author for Signs and Wonders in Ministry Today, and has written Greek word studies for The Complete Biblical Library, the commentary on 2 Corinthians in the Full Life Bible Commentary to the New Testament, and various articles in Paraclete, Pentecostal Evangel and Pathways for Young Adults. He completed intensive Spanish language courses at Centro de Investigaciones Culturales y Estudios Linguísticos in San José, Costa Rica, during the summer of 2000 and 2003. Dr. Hernando is a member of the Evangelical Theological Society, the Society of Biblical Literature and the Society for Pentecostal Studies.

Couldn't put it down.

The storyline is great and fast paced. Everything is great except that I felt during the read that there were a little too many twists in the plot. Overall it was great, but if 6 stars were available it would not have qualified due to the (just my view) excess hurdles and too many timelines the heroes partook in!

After all that, the 5 stars are still very much deserved.

This is separate from the trilogy but connected and ties up the loose ends of the trilogy focused on alternative time lines. The flow and editing is not as complete as the trilogy but still very worth hanging in and sticking to the end to see what is D Wehr's thoughts about a wrap-up to this space opera. If D Wehr would write more after a break, I would look forward to what he forecasts for the future of humans and AIs in this alternative time line. At any rate, I would find that interesting.

visual exercises - for serious designers

This is a technical book that is an attempt to teach what RRK developed over a lifetime obsession with visual compositions. She did one thing, over and over, refining it over a long and productive career at Pratt, in Brooklyn. As such, I believe that it would best be used in the classroom, rather than as a simple read for those who want to understand modern design. Being ignorent about issues in studio design - really doing it, rather than observing it like I do - I got a lot out of it. But I will need to refer to it and read through many more times to truly absorb the exercises. For what it is, the book is a masterpiece as an exercise in visual thinking and the method left its imprint on many of the greatest American designers from before WWII to the 1980s.
Recommended, but for designers rather than design critics.

Review of The Elements of Design

I do believe I am somewhat qualified to review this work. After all I was one of Rowena's "boys" in the early 1960s.
The last time I saw Rowena in 1985 she told me she was working on a book. At the time, I was teaching three dimensional design at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. I too wanted to write a book about three-dimensional design and had given it a good start. Along the way I realized the impossibility of writing about dimensional design. It can't be done. It can be approached, as this present work does. But when you get right down to understanding the words on the page, they are as slippery in writing as they were with Rowena in person. I couldn't conceive how she could write it down. It is not surprising that she did not finish it. Her thoughts were too abstract to concretize them.
I recall one dialog with her:
"Not quite," she said turning my work. "Just look at it."
"I'm looking, Rowena, "I replied.
"Well look at it some more. You need to get the balance."
The book outlines a series of exercises that Rowena used to develop the ability to see dimensionally. As her student, I did all those exercises, and looking at them in the book and reading the comments of others (many of whom were my classmates) brings back many memories.
I recall how, four years after graduation, I was working in an ID office designing a typewriter, when suddenly it all became clear. I phoned her that evening. "Well, you were a smart kid, Winston. I figured you'd get it."
And then six more years from there, seeing the "convexity" problem that my parents had so proudly displayed in their living room, and realizing that I now *at that instant,* saw why she had been disappointed with it. My experiences are echoed by many of those quoted. It is nice to know that I was not alone.
The reader can look at the projects shown (and beautiful pictures they are!), and read her words and the words of her pupils, and perhaps they will get a glimmer of what an amazing force this woman was. But her text is slippery, and by being that slippery, it is the quintessential Rowena.
Her method, as is stressed in the book, was completely experiential. You can read *about* it but to fully understand it you have to do it-- and do it with guidance. You need to *do* the work in three dimensions and have her (or someone who studied with her) standing over you to say, "Not quite. Look at it some more."
If this book can get a younger generation interested in doing this work before all the "old guys" die off, then it will be a even more lasting monument to her vision.

An exceptional work.

I was a student of Ms. Reed at New York's Pratt Institute. This work by Gail Hannah is an important, and accurate, description of Reed's visual design methodology that has had far reaching positive consequences for our nation. Anyone seeking to understand how the visual design of three-dimensional objects can be taught, and subsequently successfully implemented, will appreciate this book. The practice of designing three-dimenional objects for use by people is an oft misunderstood subject since it is not conventional engineering nor an art unto itself. Industrial design is a unique combination of skills that forms a bridge between the end user of objects and the manufacturer. Hannah's work on Ms. Reed, her origins, and her teaching technique, begins to fill the gap in our knowledge of American ingenuity and our ability to invent. Highly recommended.
