About the Author
George Stern was born on April 21, 1931, in the Budapest suburb of ?pest. After the war, he immigrated to Israel and fought in the War of Independence. George and his wife, Judit, left Israel for So Paulo, Brazil with their two children in 1960, where they lived until they immigrated to Canada in 1969. George Stern is very active in Holocaust education both in Toronto, where he and his wife still live, and in Florida.

excellent revision of a classical text on statistical pattern recognition

The 1973 book by Duda and Hart was a classic. It surveyed the literature on pattern classification and scene analysis and provided the practitioner with wonderful insight and exposition of the subject. In the intervening 28 years the field has exploded and there has been an enormous increase in technical approaches and applications.
With this in mind the authors and their new coauthor David Stork go about the task of providing a revision. True to the goals of the original the authors undertake to describe pattern recognition under a variety of topics and with several available methods to cover each topic. Important new areas are covered and old but now deemed less significant are dropped. Advances in statistical computing and computing in general also dictate the topics. So although the authors are the same and the title is almost the same (note that scene analysis is dropped from the title) it is more like an entirely new book on the subject rthan a revision of the old. For a revision, I would expect to see mostly the same chapters with the same titles and only a few new chapters along with expansion of old chapters.

Although I view this as a new book, that is not necessarily bad. In fact it may be viewed as a strength of the book. It maintains the style and clarity of the original that we all loved but represents the state-of-the-art in pattern recognition at the beginning of the 21st Century.

The original had some very nice pictures. I liked some of them so much that I used them with permission in the section on classification error rate estimation in my bootstrap book. This edition goes much further with beautiful graphics including many nice three-dimensional color pictures like the one on the cover page.

The standard classical material is covered in the first five chapters with new material included (e.g. the EM algorithm and hidden markov models in Chapter 3). Chapter 6 covers multilayer neural networks (a totally new area). Nonmetric methods including decision trees and the CART methodology are covered in Chapter 8. Each chapter has a large number of relevant references and many homework exercises and computer exercises.

Chapter 9 is "Algorithm-Independent Machine Learning" and it includes the wonderful "No Free Lunch" theorem (Theorem 9.1), a discussion of the minimum desciption length principle, overfitting issues and Occam's razor, bias - variance tradeoffs,resampling method for estimation and classifier evaluation, and ideas about combining classifiers.

Chapter 10 is on unsurpervised learning and clustering. In addition to the traditional techniques covered in the first edition the authors include the many advances in mixture models.

I was particularly interested in that part of Chapter 9. There is good coverage of the topics and they provide a number of good references. However, I was a bit disappointed with the cursory treatment of bootstrap estimation of classification accuracy (section 9.6.3 on pages 485 - 486). I particularly disagree with the simplistic statement "In practice, the high computational complexity of bootstrap estimation of classifier accuracy is rarely worth possible improvements in that estimate (Section 9.5.1)". On the other hand, the book is one of the first to cover the newer and also promising resampling approaches called "Bagging" and "Boosting" that these authors seem to favor.

Davison and Hinkley's bootstrap text is mentioned for its practical applications and guidance for bootstrapping. The authors overlook Shao and Tu which offers more in the way of guidance. Also my book provides some guidance for error rate estimation but is overlooked.

My book also illustrate the limitations of the bootstrap. Phil Good's book provides guidance and is mentioned by the authors. But his book is very superficial and overgeneralized with respect to guiding practitioners. For these reasons I held back my enthusiasm and only gave this text four stars.

A Very Bad Sequel

I have now used this book 3 times for a class. While the 1st edition did a nice job of covering the material in its time, the additions to in the 2nd addition are a disaster. What the book has going for it is that it at least lists the necessary material for such a course in the table of contents. However, all the additional material is poorly explained at best. The problem sets are too few and the ones that are included are generally weak.

I have tried to use this book, but after constant student complaints and my own difficulty with the text, I have finally concluded that the problem lies with the text and not with the users.

I think an indicator of problems was the large number of errors in the first printing; large here is an understatement. Even in later additions, the 4th, the size of the errata is huge. I think this is indicative of the authors' attention to detail and seriousness in preparation. I have found similar errors and ambiguities in the associate Computer Manual.

The bottom line is that this book has seen its final appearance in our curriculum. I would use any other text, even an older one.

There is simply not enough room or time to point out all the problems with this text. Do yourself a favor if considering this text for a class. Don't bother.

Hubert Wolf, born in 1959, is professor of Medieval and Modern Church History at the University of Muenster, Germany. “Save, Save Me!”
 
“Shortly after eight o’clock on Monday, July 25, the Archbishop of Edessa—sent by the Lord—finally came to me. There was no time for waiting; this was the one and only time to get saved. To him, I had to reveal everything and had to implore him to help me escape the convent as swiftly as possible. It all went well: my prayers were fulfilled, and I was understood.” These dramatic words were set down by Princess Katharina von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen in a com- plaint she submitted to the pope in summer 1859. They were written barely five weeks after her escape from the convent of Sant’Ambrogio in Rome—or rather, after her cousin, Archbishop Gustav Adolf zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst, managed to secure her release—and they describe the sensational conclusion to her adventure inside the walls of a Roman Catholic convent. It was an adventure for which she had narrowly avoided paying with her life.
 
She had been humiliated, isolated from her fellow nuns, cut off from the outside world, and—since she was party to the convent secrets and therefore regarded as a danger—somebody had tried to silence her. They had even made several attempts to poison her. At half past three in the afternoon on July 26, 1859, after almost exactly fifteen months, she finally left Sant’Ambrogio della Massima. Her life as Sister Luisa Maria of Saint Joseph, a nun in the Regulated Third Order of Holy Saint Francis in Rome, had begun so promisingly. And now here she was, being saved in the nick of time, rescued from imminent danger of death.
 
In her written complaint, the princess gave her failure as a nun and her thrilling escape from the convent a typically pious interpretation, casting it as salvation by Christ the Lord. This somehow made the experience bearable for her. But the final dramatic episode, and the preceding months she had spent under the constant fear of death, would come to define her whole life. After July 26, 1859, nothing would ever be the same again. Her plight had been genuinely existential: her life really was threatened in Sant’Ambrogio. Even years later, she was still traumatized by the attempts to poison her. This is all brought vividly to life in her Erlebnisse (Experiences), a book written by her close collaborator Christiane Gmeiner in 1870, more than a decade after the terrible events in Rome. According to this auto-biographical source, Katharina had managed to smuggle a letter out of the convent during the night of July 24, 1859. This was handed to Archbishop Hohenlohe in the Vatican.
 
The princess waited in a state of great anxiety until she was called into the parlor at half past seven in the morning. Fearful and almost breathless, the princess hurried downstairs to the archbishop, to whom she called out in great agitation: “save, save me!” At first, he did not understand her, and was almost afraid his cousin had run mad, but by and by she managed to convince him that she was mistress of her senses, and that her fear was not unfounded. Now he understood her pleas to leave the convent, and he promised to do everything in his power to arrange this as soon as possible— though the first appointment he was able to make was not until the following day.
 
The words are Christiane Gmeiner’s, recounting in the third person what the princess had told her in her own words.
 
Katharina von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen’s account sounds like a story from the depths of the Middle Ages, and confirms many of the common clichés and prejudices about life in Catholic convents and monasteries. But this story takes place in the modern world of the mid-nineteenth century. And the setting isn’t a secluded mountain convent at the world’s edge, but the center of the capital city of Christianity, little more than half a mile from the Vatican—home to the representative of Jesus Christ on earth.
 
What really happened in Sant’Ambrogio? Were these poisonings simply the fantasy of a highly strung aristocrat, or were they genuine attempts on Katharina’s life? She was a princess of the house of Hohenzollern and a close relative of Wilhelm I, the man who would later become king of Prussia and the German emperor. So how did Katharina come to take her vows in such a strict religious order in the first place—and why in Rome?

Fascinating Reading

This book is an amazing, behind the scenes look at the inner workings of an Italian convent during the 19th century. The author (and the translator) did a great job of giving the reader a thorough background of the political climate (secular and some non-secular) during this time period, which helped tremendously to put the story in context. The beginning of the book is a little dry, but given that this is historical non-fiction, I can understand the author's need to properly set the stage.

I definitely encourage everyone to keep on reading, as once the German princess's story is told, the book reads like a true thriller, where fact is definitely stranger than fiction. An isolated, self-contained community like a convent or a monastery can lend itself to severe abuse of power and corruption, and unfortunately, Sant'Ambrogio Convent and its members fell victim to the psychopathic machinations of one particular nun in power. What makes this story so shocking is the setting, and that many of the nuns truly believed they were doing the right thing (in the name of heaven), as they had taken vows to strictly obey their superiors, without question, even though they were actually all on a journey to hell and real evil. Unbelievably, a nun, Maria Luisa, is certainly the equal to any notorious cult leader of our time. Especially those who use the power of faith and spirituality to control their followers (as most of them do).

Anyone interested in the history of the Catholic Church would really enjoy this book, but it is written so well, I would also recommend it to those who enjoy true crime or even historical fiction thrillers. The book reads easy, like fiction, but is simply astounding because the story is actually true. A great read, all around.

Truth is stranger than fiction

What a fascinating book! The Vatican has been opening up some of its archives in recent years and remarkable stories have been coming to light. This book deals with the events at a convent in Rome in the late 1850's, which have been suppressed for more than 100 years, and it would be an understatement to describe them as jaw-dropping. The National Enquirer looks tame compared to the revelations here. Hubert Wolf is perhaps the leading scholar working in the church archives in recent years, and the scholarship in this book is truly prodigious. But (surprisingly) the book is completely accessible to the non-specialist reader, who can cheerfully ignore the 100 pages of notes and references. The author assumes virtually nothing about the reader's knowledge, and takes care to explain exactly what the political and religious issues were: the battle between the Papal States and the Risorgimento, the conflict between conservative and liberal wings in the church, and so on. The book literally reads like a page-turner of a novel, and it's all true! There's a new surprise in each chapter, including a remarkable suggestion about how the scandal related indirectly to the phrasing of the doctrine of papal infallibility (Pastor aeternus, 1870). And kudos to Ruth Martin, the translator, who did an excellent and highly readable job. Enthusiastically recommended to anybody with an interest in Italian or religious history, or just a prurient interest in nuns and priests spectacularly misbehaving.

One of the best non-fiction books most people won't read

"No one expects the written Inquisition." Time magazine found this book, now available in translation from the German, an interesting read--and I did too. Although the book appears to have solid academic and theological credentials, I read as an uninformed lay person and a Protestant at that, so the church history and processes were completely new to me. It helps if you keep front and center that neither Europe nor the Catholic Church in the mid-19th century were anything like they are today. We're talking pre-papal infallibility!

Don't worry this will be too dry. You've got political intrigue, both secular and religious, Catholicism versus the Protestants, conflicting opportunities and relative positions of male and female religious, double identities, heresy, miracles, visions, cult formation, letters from heaven, enough lascivious behavior to shock TMZ, multiple murders/attempts--and a beautiful, radiant psychopath of a novice mistress. The account of how the novice mistress came to rule the convent has all the techniques and hallmarks of development of cults in the 21st century--effective methods will remain in vogue.

When we get to the work of the Roman Inquisition itself, there are a few aspects that are a wee bit "inside baseball." It can be difficult keeping the nuns straight with all the Maria Luisas and Luisa Marias. But it's worth the effort as Wolf explores the individual and institutional dynamics that contributed to this dangerous cult, interfered with the judicial procedures and impacted how the episodes are reflected in church and secular history 150 years later. And that impact is not inconsequential.

In the Victorian era, there was practically a sub-genre of "escape from the nunnery" novels that were titillating but not too. In the 20th century, another take on "inside the convent" saw publication of horror stories of abuse designed to discredit the Catholic Church. This is neither. Full points to the author and to the translator as well, who must also have an extensive knowledge of European history and Catholic judicial process to bring this work to light.

Another lesson by BC: Never judge a book by its cover!

Here is the summary:

"Her father had died on their way home to England, his career in shambles, his name disgraced by accusations of treason. Now Canuela Arlington and her mother were alone in London in desperate need of money. Canuela would have to find work. Knowing her delicate beauty was sure to provoke unwelcome advances, Canuela pulled her long golden hair back sharply from her face, obscured her dazzling grey-green eyes with huge glasses and dressed in unflattering black. Her excellent qualifications soon interested an employer: Rambn de Lopez, the handsome Argentine aristocrat, one of the wealthiest men in South America. Canuela trembled with rage at the mere mention of his name: Ramon was an "old friend" of her father's, one of the many who deserted in the crisis. Canuela would repay him for his disloyalty. It would not be difficult to destroy him. If only he were not so wildly attractive . . ."

Well, first to all, I dislike anything that it's not about England. And that must seem weird, being my background mexican. I have never encountered anything more royal than the covers of these novels. Anyone should think that I, of all people, would love a novel about a south american country. The answer is no. I just like novels about english royalty, I even dislike those about russians just because it's a way to marry a non-royal girl with a King. I read this novel because it came in a big lot I bought in ebay, and because I was bored that day. And after reading so many BC novels I'm realizing the ones I like the most are those I didn't want to read at the first place. Ironic.

Well, that being said and taking advantage that no one else has written anything about this novel, I must say this one became one of my favorites novels and have a special mark among those in my personal collection.

Now that soap operas like "Ugly Betty" are becoming more and more popular, this novel could get an even higher grade. Canuela changed her appareance to look unattractive.. on purpose! What reminds me one line when he finally sees her without glasses: "So that's why you hide your eyes..."

I rate the books by the times my heart leaps while reading it, this one made it leap three times. It deserves 4 stars. The ones that give me a headache deserve 1. It's a good scale.

Here is a good line:
"I realize that it would be impossible for a woman with your looks to work in and ordinary office without facing intolerable insults from men who would be unable to leave you alone. But you have made it very clear that you hate me and I am extremely conscious of my short-comings where you are concerned. I therefore suggest that you discard what is a very ineffective disguise!"

Part A begins with the fundamental concepts of structure and stereochemistry, and the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of reactivity. An extremely useful text for courses involving organic chemistry at graduate level and an excellent reference text, it is much better than many other similar texts on the market. Probably most useful for the study of physical organic chemistry and studying for cumulative exams in the graduate chemistry program. This is probably the only such text you would need for mechanism determination problems. This text also has many example problems to work through which chemistry students would find the most useful.

Pick the Right Dare . . . for Lasting Greatness

This book contains the most detailed information I have seen assembled
in one volume about the life of Dr. Edwin "Din" Land, founder of
Polaroid Corporation. Although I long have read public accounts of
Dr. Land's work, this book greatly added to my knowledge.
For
those who would like to understand the rise and fall of Polaroid and
its stock price over several decades from 1937 through 1980, this book
makes fascinating reading about some of the do's and don't's of
running a high technology company that depends on developing new
technologies and an on-going stream of innovative products.
If you
want to understand the techniques employed by Dr. Land to make
scientific breakthroughs, there are many insights here into his method
of goal-oriented empiricism. Interestingly, it parallels the
approaches used by Thomas Edison, the most prolific inventor of the
20th century. Unfortunately, Dr. Land left little in the way of
writings to draw on other than patent applications and speeches, so
these insights are limited primarily to recollections by colleagues.
On the other hand, the empirical approach is often guided by instinct
based on experience, which is hard to capture. Most scientific
thinkers dislike empiricism, so those who use this method can expect
many rebukes . . . as Dr. Land received in his work on the nature of
color perception.
Those who want to understand the scientific
breakthroughs that Polaroid made will probably come away confused
unless they already have a great knowledge of optics and chemistry
related to photography. I learned a great deal from the book, but
would have liked to learn more. I graded the book down one star for
this weakness.
If you want a fascinating, new look into the
emerging arms race with the Soviet Union in the 1950s, there is much
interesting material here about Dr. Land's role as a national advisor
on defense surveillance.
I was a guest at a dinner hosted by
Dr. Land in the mid 1960s during which he demonstrated his new
technology of instant color photography...His good humor,
generous attitude toward his guests, and his sincere desire to
transform the world, however, left me with a more profound lesson --
seeing much more potential for what a company can be than I would
otherwise have had. Dr. Land explained his vision that night in terms
of releasing the human spirit and encouraging all of us to create and
appreciate more beauty. Although glimpses of this side of Dr. Land
come through in the book, they are overshadowed by the overall theme
of a flawed genius.
I dislike books that argue for flaws in
geniuses. That approach serves to make them more human, but not in a
way that makes us appreciate them or their good points. Geniuses are
by their nature obsessed by their work, and their personal quirks can
be quite negative. ... By the standards of 20th century geniuses,
Dr. Land was a regular guy. In fact, the extent to which he retained
his humanity is part of his greatness.
I think an alternative
explanation to the one in this book of Dr. Land's limitations as a
leader is entirely possible and appropriate. Whenever he was engaged
in endeavors where strong leaders were involved as colleagues or
partners (such as on national defense issues), he was astonishingly
effective. Whenever he was totally given his head, he sometimes
strayed into areas where his vision exceeded the true opportunity.
Clearly, his talent as a technical problem solver vastly exceeded his
talent as an evaluator of product potential.
The story of
Polaroid's rise and fall as depicted here could just as easily be
rewritten as the story of a board of directors and financiers who did
not do their job of providing limits. For example, when Polaroid was
originally taken public in 1937, the investment bankers granted
Dr. Land a 10 year period of total control through a voting trust.
Although every company founder would like such control, that's simply
a bad idea. Management has to be and feel accountable...His authority
seems to me to have been much greater than that normally granted to a
CEO in taking a new product forward....Hopefully, a future book will
look at the fascinating governance challenges and issues related to
being on the board of a company led by a scientific genius who has
provided most of the company's historic value added.
After you
have finished reading and thinking about the fascinating issues in
this book, I suggest that you consider what you would like your legacy
to be. Then, consider what mistakes you will have to avoid in order
to accomplish that legacy. How can others help you overcome your
weaknesses to accomplish more?
Be willing to insist on the
impossible, when it's the right thing to do. You can do it!

The Impossible Takes Longer to Achieve

Insisting on the Impossible by Victor K. McElheny is a fascinating account of the life of Edwin Land. While this 510 page book may not get the Pulitzer Prize for literature, it is nevertheless an interesting study of a genius who established an empire but was also responsible for much of its financial troubles. This book is often being criticized for its lack of good structure and difficulty in following the story. However, to my knowledge, it is the most complete account, in a single book, of the life and activities of Dr. Edwin Land and his Polaroid Corporation. The book is organized in chapters that at times seem to have little connection to each other. Perhaps this is the result of a 30-year research and notes on the topic taken by its author. Some of the chapters may not appeal, or be understood, by all readers because of their technical background. On the other hand, one can skip certain chapters without missing or diminishing from the rest of the story. For example, the development of the polarizer sheet will fascinate those interested in stereoscopic photography, while the heavy chapters on the chemistry of photography will appeal to anyone who has ever tried to understand how light is captured and converted to an image on film and paper. The chapters on Land's involvement in the highest military and national secrets as an advisor to Eisenhower, give a interesting glimpse on high-tech spying and are relevant today as well.
Finally, it is a story of a man who changed the world around him and others because of his passion for science and technology. It is quite possible that for Dr. Land, the impossible simply took longer to achieve.

Nice Story, Poorly Written

I rarely write a review before I have completed a text, but am 250 pages into this book and wanted to warn as many others as possible. This book is clearly the weakest of the Sloan Technology Series to date for a number of reasons.
The author frequently delves into ridiculous levels of detail about trivial events, and then glazes over larger technical issues. There is no in depth explanation of the chemical and physical explanations which enabled Land to develop Polaroid into a successful company. There is no rhyme or reason to the flow of the text, and it appears largely to follow the thought stream of the notes that the author used to put the text together. There is almost no quality treatment of the business aspects of Polaroid, the author making passing references when it so suits him.
This is a very thick book, which is quite laborious to read. Unfortunately, the thickness does not translate into quality, or even quantity, of useful information located within.

Christian Miller presents a new account of moral character. Most of our friends, colleagues, and even family members are not virtuous people. Or we would pretend to not see someone collapse from an apparent heart attack across the street. Or we would make a wide circle around someone's dropped papers rather than stop to help pick them up. Yet it is also true that many of us would help another person when we are by ourselves and hear sounds of a non-ambiguous emergency in the next room. Or we would come to the aid of a friend when feeling empathy for her need, and do so for altruistic rather than egoistic reasons.

Christian B. Miller, Wake Forest University

Christian Miller is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Wake Forest University. His main areas of research are meta-ethics, moral psychology, moral character, action theory, and philosophy of religion. He is also the author of Character and Moral Psychology (OUP forthcoming), and the editor of The Continuum Companion to Ethics (Continuum 2011) and Essays in the Philosophy of Religion (OUP 2006). His work has appeared in such journals as Nous, Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, Philosophical Studies, Philosophical Psychology, The Journal of Ethics, Journal of Ethics and Social Philosophy, and Oxford Studies in Philosophy of Religion. He is the director of The Character Project (www.thecharacterproject.com), which is funded by the John Templeton Foundation.
