Manfred B. Steger is Professor of Political Science and Senior Advisor on International Education and Globalization to the Dean of Social Sciences at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. A tad dogmatic, but very clear and analytical....

Schick and Vaughn do a fine job of presenting and explaining philosophical problems and theories about free will, the relationship of body and mind, personal identity, morality, the existence of God, and the limits of knowledge. Their presentation is rather rigorous for an introductory text, but their frequent use of thought experiments helps make very abstract topics more accessible. Yes, they do take stands on the issues they discuss, and their secularist axe-grinding can come across as somewhat heavy handed. It can certainly antagonize some students and readers. But this is a minor flaw in an otherwise high quality introductory text. Rather than trying to maintain bogus neutrality, Schick and Vaughn actually "do" philosophy and show how one can arrive at conclusions--even disputable conclusions--using philosophy's methods, and this is to their credit. As for Mr. Newman's sarcastic comment that "all of the great minds that approached" divine command theory in the past are not up to Schick and Vaughn's "genius"--may I ask which great minds he has in mind? It is true that many great religious thinkers can be classified as divine command theorists. But if we look at the tradition of great Western philosophers, many (and probably most) are not. What about Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Locke, Leibniz, Kant, and Mill, just to name a few? Moreover, some of these have dismissed divine command theory as pithily as our textbook authors, so Schick and Vaughn are hardly being revolutionary, let alone irresponsibly impudent, when, for example, they follow Leibniz in rejecting the divine command approach. All in all, this is a very solid introductory textbook that emphasizes how to think philosophically. I highly recommend it.

I got this edition for my introductory philosophy course. I found many of the classical and medieval arguments to be poorly stated. I would avoid using this book period.

Howard Karger is Professor and Head of the School of Social Work and Human Services, The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. David Stoesz was Professor, Virginia Commonwealth University. Howard and David have been friends and colleagues for more than 25 years. In 2001 they collaborated on the creation of policyAmerica, a nonprofit organization dedicated to disseminating innovations in social policy. In addition to American Social Welfare Policy, they coauthored (with Lela Costin) The Politics of Child Abuse in America (Oxford University Press, 1996) and Reconstructing the American Welfare State (Rowman and Littlefield, 1992). Howard’s book, Shortchanged: Life and Debt in the Fringe Economy (Berret-Koehler, 2005) examines the financial practices and products that exploit millions of American families and won the 2006 Independent Publishers Award in Finance/Investment/Economics. David’s book, Quixote’s Ghost: The Right, the Liberati, and the Future of Social Policy (Oxford University Press, 2005), explains how conservatives have assumed control of domestic policy and proposes a new framework for social policy. It won the 2006 Pro Humanitate Literary Award. Howard lives in Brisbane, Australia; David and his son Julio live in Alexandria, Virginia.

Informative and concise

I read this book (in conjunction with other texts) for a graduate section of a Social Policies class, and was impressed with the ease both authors transformed the abstract and dry into something exciting and inspiring.
No, social policy is not the most glamorous field for college students to enter, and unarguably the American system's shrinkage is going to pose severe problems in the next couple of years, but emotional and moral rewards of doing what is right make this venture worth it. Alternately, the authors balance this view with pragmatic political approaches that equip the reader with introductory strategies to hold off or even staunch further erosion of American social policy.
The book by itself is enjoyable, but advanced classes should use the American Welfare State as a supplementary text for historical background.

This is truly a great book, and you'll want to keep it for a reference even after your classes. Don't forget to buy the supplemental Internet Update ((...) ISBN 0801332389). It's a great resource and really helps when you need to do research or write a term paper!

Clear language, comprehensive

I've been reading Karger and Stoesz for years. This is a good, relevant edition to understanding social welfare policy. However, the 4th edition leaves out the historical perspectives; readers will want to refer to earlier editions or supplemental sources for historical content.

Dr Peter S. Morrell is Director of Research in the Department of Air Transport, College of Aeronautics, Cranfield University, UK. He is currently European Editor of the Journal of Air Transport Management, and has a doctorate from Cranfield University and graduate degrees from the University of Cambridge, UK and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. He has advised governments, airlines, airports and investment banks on aviation over the past 35 years. He has also lectured on airline economics and finance to universities and institutions around the world including Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the US, Instituto Aviaçao Civil, Brazil, Ecole National de L'Aviation Civile (ENAC), France, the Universities of Westminster and Loughborough in the UK, Danube University, Austria, Chang Jung University, Taiwan, University of New South Wales, and is currently visiting lecturer to the Polytechnic University in Hong Kong.

The only book out there that digs as deep and covers lots of ground

There aren't any books out there that dig as deep and tackle as many subjects in the cargo industry. You can look into so many sources to find so many benchmarks and numbers on the industry's market and operations and you would still not have covered as much ground as this book covers. The book is split nicely into a good structure, the references are recent, and the industry examples and tables covering the major players are well placed and discussed in good detail. This is a good book for anyone interested in tackling this industry in greater depth.
