A Solid and Accessible Textbook on Methodology

The book is clearly written, and I am using it this semester for an undergraduate class I teach. I am not a big fan of textbooks in general, as I rarely use them myself, and when I do, it is mostly for concrete and breif reference purposes. This book is very accessible. I especially liked the chapter on focus groups. The chapter on content analysis is also good, because it conveys very clearly the problems that one faces with this particular method, but at the same time the chapter is not mathematically deep. I find that most of my studnets find this book easy to use. As a book on statistics, it is not very powerful, and the presentation of even the basic methods could use better organization. But overall, this is still a useful text.

A Tough Subject Clearly Explained
By Relating Internationally
I'm a Junior at a large university, and this book is required for my Research Methods class. I've put off taking this class until now, since I'm not very math-oriented. This book explains research ideas in a very simple way, and each chapter has lots of examples from politics. My professor sometimes also has us read the sample articles that the chapters list. This is extra work, but seeing how real researchers use a method helps me understand it. By the way, there is math in the statistics section, but it's not really that bad. If you're not a natural whiz at research, this is the book for you.

I'm using this book for my undergrad political science class on research design and statistical analysis. I have previously used Johnson and Joslyn's book, which is much less expensive than Manheim and Rich. If I had known that the bookstore would charge the students so much, I would not have assigned it. The authors do a good job with research design, but the statistical section is poorly organized, and has at least one formula incorrect. If you are looking for a good book on empirical political analysis, you could probably find a better research design book and a better statistics book for about the same price.

About the Author

Mark Robert Rank is the Herbert S. Hadley Professor of Social Welfare at Washington University in St. Louis. He is widely recognized as one of the foremost experts and speakers in the country on issues of inequality, poverty, and social justice. He is the recipient of numerous awards, and his research has been reported in a wide range of academic and media outlets.

Thomas A. Hirschl is Professor of Development Sociology at Cornell University. He is the Director of the Population and Development Program, coordinator of the Program Work Team on Poverty and Economic Hardship, and Director of the Teen Assessment Program. His scholarly focus is on social class differentiation in contemporary society.

Kirk A. Foster is Assistant Professor of Social Work at the University of South Carolina. With a background in social work and theology, he researches how people with little or no income can use the resources available to them to make systematic change.

Many write about the American Dream, but for Mark Rank and his co-authors, writing wasn't enough. To get to the true understanding of the Dream, they traversed the United States, talking with Americans from all rungs of the socioeconomic ladder, collecting their stories. And it is through their stories that this book takes life. In reading the book, we meet Matt, a minor league baseball player, Jim, an auto assembly worker, Rachel, an attorney and judge, and many more Americans working daily to achieve the Dream. These meaningful personal stories of lives in struggle and in privilege highlight and enhance the very good data used by the authors to demonstrate trends in all aspects of the Dream. While this book should be required reading for high school, college and graduate students, it is also perfect for a non-academic audience.

The Realities of the American Dream

Professor Rank presents a compelling and powerful portrait of the American Dream and the forces that have converged to make it harder to achieve. Through a combination of interviews with Americans from all walks of life and extensive statistics, Professor Rank convincingly argues that a fair and equal shot at the Dream is far from a reality in America, why this is the case, and how it is only getting worse. The stories told in the book are thought-provoking and candidly describe the twists of fate that shape lives in the most profound of ways. I highly recommend this book.

It is also of value to Anglophone educators in the ancient languages as it will enable them to point up the influences of Latin and Greek on English. This is an inexpensive paperback edition (with corrections) of the original publication of 2003. John Bulwer, Bryn Mawr Reviews I've learned a lot from it and enjoyed the experience of reading it. Kenneth Haynes is Assistant Professor in the Department of Comparative Literature at Brown University. He is co-editor of Horace in English (Penguin 1996) and of the first scholarly editions of two major works by Swinburne (forthcoming from Penguin). He is also co-editor, with Peter France, of The Oxford History of Literary Translation in English, Volume 4: 1790-1890 (forthcoming).

A most wonderful conversation

I first read this book in the 1970's when it was new. I've owned a copy ever since, and I've given so many away as gifts that I've lost count.
It is easily my favorite book. From the moment I first read it, until today; I open its pages and feel as if I'm having a literary conversation with an old friend.
The "moral" in the title puts off some folks, but don't be deterred. Gardner uses the term "moral" as you or I would use the word "truth." All Gardner is imploring is that authors seek the truth when writing fiction and avoid cheap tricks and cheap effects. That is all.
Yes, Gardner did feel that writing comes with a responsibility. He also felt it was nothing less than a privilege, and thus comes the responsibility that goes with privilege.
Buy it, enjoy it. If you share Gardner's view (as illustrated in the paragraph above, I promise you -- you will cherish this volume).

An Essential Screed

This book created some stir when originally published, perhaps due more to the naming of names (of peers Gardner judged arrogant/irresponsible/careless) than to the deeper ideas/passions which inform it. One star is subtracted for poor strategy, excessive willingness to engage on turf occupied/fortified by his not at all innocent victims. Gardner does get lost, from time to time, in one abstract philosophical swamp or another. The book may be needlessly long. But the writing rings true, finally. This is the most ambitious literary argument published during the past fifty years, certainly, and it is essentially on the mark. The academic canon was tilting dangerously in the direction of empty opaque diddling during the seventies, choked with very talented hip and superhip cynics, often on university payrolls, weary of the ancient plain work of shaping stories. The vogue was so universal that Gardner fails to find a single working American high lit contender (excluding himself, we trust) to like without heavy reservations. He does favor one Englishman, at least. This ground is tricky. Some of the writing disdained/derided seeks, in various ways, to imitate James Joyce, who is granted a semi-pass, and Ezra Pound is not properly whapped until near the end. Connecting the wave of mean arrogant cleverness to its obvious roots counts, has consequences. Gardner, who died by motorcycle accident in the early eighties, may have been just beginning to fight.

Gardner's work certainly won't appeal to postmodernists or other avant-garde scribblers who believe form takes precedence over content. His thesis is simple: all art purports to better the world, not hinder it; all art essentially believes in a form of goodness, truth, beauty, whatever you want to call it, in the sense that it affirms that there is an inherent value in life and no value in "valuelessness." He comes down strongly on writers who write like "writers," and where style becomes more important than the timeless art of storytelling. All this probably won't be very compelling to many of the readers who cling to the works of 60s writers like Pynchon, Gass, Coover, et al., who write thinly disguised treatises, not novels, and who people their books not with characters but mannequins. There is something old fashioned about Gardner's point of view, which won't win him many hipster fans, but his argument, this reader feels, stands up even stronger in today's climate where the main literary trends seem to consist of endless irony, facile references to pop culture and television. Furthermore, his book is lucid, trenchant, passionate, engaging, and of course, confrontational.
