Would Not Recommend

I bought this to help me brush up on my GD&T skills, hopefully in preparation for the certification test. Also bought the problem and solution manuals. I was very disappointed.

The format doesn't make sense- very confusing. In chapters 1 & 2, the author jumps right in to some advanced stuff. It's not until chapter 3 that he gets into the basics (datums). The problems manual just regurgitates the problems shown in the textbook.

I'm still looking for the "holy grail" of GD&T books, something that presents the material in a straightforward, understandable manner. This book ain't it...

This book is absurdly bad. It takes straightforward concepts and makes them utterly confusing. As previously mentioned, the first chapter just assumes that students already know how to read GD&T. The methods aren't actually explained until much later; but even then it does a poor job of actually transferring an understanding of anything.

I am teaching a GD&T class out of this book, and it is basically worthless.

About the Author

Jack D. Edinger, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at National Jewish Health in Denver, CO. Dr. Edinger is one of the world leaders in insomnia treatment and insomnia research. He is recognized internationally for his research and clinical leadership in the areas of insomnia diagnosis and treatment. His early case series studies are among the very first to document the effectiveness of current-day cognitive behavioral insomnia therapy approaches. He has over 32 years of research and clinical experience working with insomnia patients.

Colleen E. Carney, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology and Director of the Sleep and Depression Laboratory at Ryerson University in Toronto. Dr. Carney is a world renowned expert in comorbid insomnias and the treatment of insomnia with Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). In the Sleep and Depression Laboratory she trains graduate students and treatment providers in CBT for insomnia. She also provides CBT training workshops worldwide. She uses the treatment described in this book in her randomized controlled trials, funded by such agencies as the National Institute of Mental Health, Canadian Institutes for Health Research and the National Institute for Nursing Research. Dr. Carney is passionate about improving access to empirically supported insomnia therapy to patients.

Chose this product with recommendation from sleep psychologist. I found this a good book but also felt I have learned most of the tips in the book. It is really a matter of being willing to follow what is in the workbook sections. Can be helpful especially if one does not really have an idea of tips to help you sleep. good coverage.

decent exchange. used the text to do a sleep hygiene therapy group. it proved quite helpful. sleep monitoring forms were among its strongpoints. thin, straightforward, not a lot of hocus pocus. again, decent...not great...but decent.

Introduction

The purpose of this book is to demonstrate some of the vast array of paint effects you can use to decorate surfaces. A paint-effects directory covers 100 faux finishes, all of which are clearly illustrated with step-by-step instructions, and cover a wide range of traditional and contemporary finishes with varying degrees of difficulty.

You will come to see that the most important ingredient needed for any project is enthusiasm and patience. A good general rule is to spend a lot of time visualizing your goal -- preparing, researching, and experimenting with colors and materials.

At this planning stage, samples and idea boards are invaluable. Often the simplest techniques and color combinations can convey the most complex ideas. The biggest hurdle for most of us is learning to work confidently -- gaining an understanding of your own intuitive response to color is a great way to become more self-assured.

It is also very important to consider environmental issues -- you need to find biodegradable materials, and a low-waste technique that will make as little impact on the environment as possible. Most of the projects show the use of freely available multi-purpose tools and equipment. Manufacturers are usually happy to hear your concerns and have begun to offer more choice for the discerning decorator who wishes, for example, to try out water-based products for a project when all traditional examples demonstrate the necessity of oil-based materials. Again, confidence and a willingness to experiment can lead to exciting results.

It is also important to realize that everyone has their own unique style and there is no definitive, prescribed way to achieve the perfect paint effect. Wow! Truly a Useful Instruction Book

I am very impressed with this book. There are a number of faux finishes I've been wanting to paint. There are several I've done (before buying this book) that I had no instructions for, and though they turned out very nice, they didn't quite have the exact look or the depth of color and intensity I was trying to achieve. This book had the answers I was looking for. I have tabbed at least 15 of the effects I will be trying. I have been looking for a proper illustration especially on how to paint faux lapis lazuli, malachite, and on using bringing powders.

The consistent color photos on each technique are perfect. I am hoping for a sequel with even more finishes!

The only thing I saw missing from this book was in painting stripes with a very clean edge, one can use a very light coat of printable caulk along thru edge of the tape that separates the area to be painted. Paint right over the tape edge and dry caulk, peel the tape at an angle toward the paint while the paint is still wet, and you get perfectly clean edges. Most painter's tape leaves a wiggly edge, even when pressed down hard. No, I have not tried any of the tape that gels along the edge as the paint touches it. My walls are heavily textured and I think even using that special tape would not create clean lines. Anyway, a great addition to my "how to paint" library. This one will see lots of use!

Not really so great for beginners

This book is more like an "encylopedia" than a "how to do it". I likes to refer to it but there are other books that are much better if you actually intend to decorate your house or a valued object with an effect. The Paint Receipe book is a wonderful book for getting started and gives explicit instructions. This book covers a lot of effects with a brief about how to achieve them and is best used if you have some experience.

Good how-tos, only a few effects I would really use

This is one of those books you really need to preview before you buy. I bought it without a preview (or without flipping through it in the store) because I had a few walls with horrible drywall and I thought some faux would cheer them up. I was bored with the techniques I've used in the past.

The book is very well designed. It is spiral bound so you can lay it flat while you paint. I love that the step-by-step directions come with photos of each step, and they really are idiot proof. I've used one finish and it turned out nicely.

However, the effects I would actually use are few. I wish I would have read it first to find out that only 2-3 of them were in my tastes. I didn't deduct any stars for that, because that is not the book's fault. It does a great job for what it is.

About the Author
Steve Cannon is a geologist by profession, a petrophysicist by inclination and a reservoir modeller by design.  Graduating in 1977, Steve has worked as a geologist and petrophysicist in all sectors of the oil and gas industry, including government, major and independent oil companies, the service sector and consultancy.  Having had the opportunity to work offshore and in a core analysis laboratory, as well as a reservoir geologist has helped to shape his appreciation of petrophysics constrained by geology.  Steve is a Past-President of the London Petrophysical Society.

Masonry exposed

I found the book to be enlightening, as far as the rituals performed for initiating the new members. The graphics depicting the actual initiation were sometimes hard to decipher, but you can get the drift, because of the explanatory text. Overall, even though this is a small book physically it contains a lot of info on all degrees of membership and makes a good addition to your research library.

The Elements of Responsible Business

The Responsible Company is like the Elements of Style, that basic guide to writing that has served so many writers and readers. In beautifully written, clean prose, it boils down the basics of responsibility to employees, customers and the planet. There is another way to do business besides the quick profit and the scorched earth policy of so many corporations. There is another way to do business and survive as a business. Even make a profit.
I recommend this book especially to people who do not read business books, whose inclination might be toward literary essays or novels. It's a great read and you will know so much more about the realities of the business world, and the often agonizing decisions Patagonia had to make to get to where it is now: a company trying to earn the
right to call itself responsible.

Read this book!

The Responsible Company is surprisingly hard to put down and the antidote to all the discouraging news about corporate America. Simple in concept, it describes clearly and succinctly why we need to revamp our collective business practice before the planet's resources run out, then provides practical checklists for how to go about it. The authors draw on their own experiences at Patagonia, describing some of the moments that "stunned them into consciousness", and also bring news of other companies who have come to the table--DuPont, Nike, and Wal-Mart among them--and some of the surprising and heartening coalitions they've formed. The writing is excellent, the voice that of someone you'd be happy to find yourself seated next to at an interesting dinner party. Despite the credibility of Patagonia--I always think of them as a company that tries to "walk the walk"--the tone is one of humility; there's an inherent conflict between making and selling products that consume resources and create waste and acting responsibly, and Chouinard and Stanley acknowledge it and are candid about how far Patagonia or anyone else is from achieving real sustainability. Still, it's a hopeful book, one I wish everyone would read.

Very disappointing

This is a very badly put together book. I think the other reviewers must either know the author or haven't gone through coding up the examples.

It starts off describing the world of Rx, all familiar to me as I've used it since 2010 albeit not for JavaScript development. Then comes the first exercise, the creation of an earthquake monitoring application. There's no real guidance here just a bunch of loosely related files that the reader must figure out how to assemble. The promise is to remove callback hell but the code is just a series of callbacks (see attached). It's awfully structured as well with some scripts dumped in the HTML pages and others referenced in external files. In the uploaded picture, just where is the loadJSONP(...) function? Who knows? Oh, it's an island of script back in index.html.

The book promised so much but fails to deliver. I think the main issue is lazyness with the exercises/examples, followed by poor code structure and I don't know why the author doesn't make use of ES6 features such as arrows instead of passing functions around everywhere.

Just started reading and the 2nd chapter starts with broken code and examples that have small differences. This adds to a lot of bad mental load when reading the book.

This code[...]is broken. Because there is no response property on the data that comes back [...]
So what you get if you follow the code from the book is "Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'features' of undefined". So what you need to do is change the flatMap code too look like this ".flatMap((dataset) => Rx.Observable.from(dataset.features)):"

Things like this makes it way harder too learn from the book since you need too spend time debugging the example code.

Would learn from this book but do not buy.

If you can grab this book for free, go ahead, but don't pay for it:

1. It uses RxJs 4.0 and RxJs 5.0 is out and much of the syntax related to operators has changed.

2. The examples are poor choices. The enemy spaceship annoyed me. I guess the author was appealing to millennials while I would have preferred something geared more towards business events.

3. While all books have erratas, some key errors are in this and if RxJs is new to you, it can become frustrating.

But I am glad I read this book, I got it for free, and it helped open my eyes much better about RxJs Observables and Operators.

Unfortunately, despite this technology being out for a few years, there are very few books on it, and the GitHub for 5.0 documentation is scarce leaving you to flip back and forth to the 4.0 GitHub to see what changed.

I am absolutely convinced this will be part of the ES7 advances because this type of Observables is light years better than Promises and Promises are light years ahead of callback hell.

About the Author
Randy Harris is a popular speaker at conferences, churches, and college campuses across the United States and around the world. He is a professor of theology and ethics at Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas--after a decade of teaching at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee--and has received numerous awards for his classroom work. He holds degrees from Harding Graduate School of Religion and Syracuse University, and is the author of God Work: Confessions of a Stand-up Theologian (Leafwood, 2009) and other books. He is a single Christian who grew up in Bentonville, Arkansas.

A challenge to go deeper with God

You probably think that being a monk is a full-time occupation, right? But what if you could learn from the most committed monks, without actually moving to a monastery? That's exactly what Randy Harris shows us in "Soul Work: Confessions of a Part-Time Monk."

I'll admit that I was hooked more by the subtitle of this book. After all, whoever heard of a part-time monk. Randy Harris set out to find out more about the deep spiritual walk for which so many monks and hermits are renowned. In the beginning of the book, Randy states that there was something he disagreed with in almost every monastery or hermitage he visited. But he culled through all they had to offer, and presented the best practices in "Soul Work."

In short, there is much to learn from the unhurried, quiet, peaceful, and deeply-abiding lives of those who separate themselves from general society. What a huge contrast with our frantic, noisy, stressful, superficial lives. Randy shares what he learned about...
* Deeper intimacy with God
* A more refreshed outlook on life
* A life infused with hope
* More meaningful prayer times
* Greater levels of obedience
* God-honoring humility
* A more satisfying relationship with God

But we won't pursue any of these things unless we are truly dissatisfied with our current spiritual level. As Randy wrote, "We do not move in our spiritual lives until we experience some dissatisfaction with what we've got. ...The first step toward living an intimate life with God is to realize our own desperation, and that desperation comes largely by developing some sense of God's holiness."

This is not a casual read. It's a book that forced me to confront how much more of God I really wanted in my life, and if I was willing to make the necessary changes to achieve greater intimacy. I was challenged by Soul Work, and I think you will be too.

Never enough Locke

Teacher Teacher is a treasure. A jewel. An unexpected gem in the midst of this dreary winter. I have yet to read one of Mr. Locke's novels and not fall in love with his characters. Now that could mean I have the same twisted, sarcastic wit. Which is a very wonderful thing. Miss Conroy is precious, and Dani is quickly becoming my favorite character. The sensitive subject matter is handled in only a way JPL could do it, as I kept laughing throughout the entire book.

I tried to pace myself, but it never works. I finished within hours. Thanks Big Guy - Another winner!
