Why build a Seven? Putting a sports car on the road, a personal record., by Michael Eddenden

Ever Forced To Build Your Own Car? The first Lotus Seven appeared in 1957. It was unique, a race car for the road. In a time when cars stood for chrome and power and road-holding weight, the Seven was light, quick, nimble and bracing. It was also spartan, hopelessly impractical and sold as a kit, assembly required. Soon it was the benchmark for a sports car - unconventional, fast, rare, and not for everyone. What was unforgivable in other cars justified the Seven. More than 5o years later it's still in production. Now as then, owners have to build their cars. When Michael Eddenden sets out to build a Caterham Seven the fingertip ease of the digital age is replaced by unheated garages, fumes and typed instructions obscured by oily fingerprints. For anyone who has ever wanted to build something with their own hands - despite skill, aptitude and experience. Caterham Cars, manufacturer of the 7, was purchased by Formula 1 Team Lotus in 2011. Paperback Edition. . .Now with added Photographs, 2014.

The Caterham dream
By Ed.
Brilliant and hilarious. I wanted to build and drive one before this book. Now, I want to build and drive more than ever.

This book is not really a "how-to" build the car. It's more of a "Why to". It's one man's experience trying to decide if the dream is possible. Caterham sends you a basic "how-to" when they ship your kit car. Michael Eddenden tells you everything else you need to know about the tortured journey those of us are setting ourselves up for once we fall in love with these cars.

His reports on all details of his journey in an honest and light hearted manner. Lots of quotes from builders, reviewers and owners pepper this work. As well as plenty of wonderful illustrations too.

Why build anything?
By alex wigley
The adventure of creating something always has it's ups and downs. Failure IS an option. Far too often we refuse to be innovative or challenged in our lives. It's scary. It could be embarrassing. It could be expensive. There are an infinite number of excuses and choices. If you are a fat and happy flat liner, don't read this book. So sorry, you are already dead. If you want to reach out and stretch for something, I think you will really enjoy this funny account of chasing the dream. Assembly required, battery not included.

Great for a rainy afternoon
By Amazon Customer
I don't read a lot of westerns, but it's been a while since I'd seen a menage western, so this one caught my eye. I'm glad I picked it up. The plot, though simple, was entertaining and kept my interest. Gigi's word usage really sank me into the time period with words like hankering, young'un, and cottoned to. There were a couple instances where I had to reread a paragraph to confirm who was doing or saying what, but it didn't detract from the overall story. After all, when there's sensual sex between more than one, you want to know who's where, right? ;) The relationship dynamics between the three men developed nicely, if a little too easily for three men hiding their natures in the wild west. All in all, if you're looking for a relaxing fun read to curl up with while sipping tea, I recommend this one. It puts me in a mind to see what else Gigi has out there.

Too Much Restriction, Segregation, and Being in The Closet in This Western
By Daniel Bowen
I agree with another reviewer - There was too much going on in this story. There was prejudice against a black being a lawman and 'lording it over white men.' There were segregated whore houses for blacks and those for whites. Being gay was a huge no no. Then there were the insecure feelings from an older man, a well established Saloon owner, over a younger man. Being in the closet is the norm in this day and age. Toss in all the hang ups with jealousy because getting three men together in times like those is just a bit too much. This wasn't an enjoyable read, it was more work wading thru all the social norms. And all that is presented before the men get together. I lost interest and gave up on it, unfinished. - Dan's Wife

Homoerotic, but sweet too
By Jwes
I liked all the characters, and I rooted for them to get together. However, it felt like there was too much going on in this story (dealing with racism, and with prejudice against a werewolf?) to stop me from feeling it was silly most of the time. Split these scenarios into a couple of different stories and it might be more interesting.

Galileo, by John L. Heilbron

In 1610, Galileo published the Siderius nuncius, or Starry Messenger, a "hurried little masterpiece" in John Heilbron's words. Presenting to the world his remarkable observations using the recently invented telescope--the craters of the moon, the satellites of Jupiter--Galileo dramatically challenged our idea of the perfection of the heavens and the centrality of the Earth in the universe. Indeed, the appearance of the little book is regarded as one of the great moments in the history of science.

Here is a major new biography of Galileo, a fresh and much more rounded view of the great scientist than found in previous works. Unlike previous biographers, Heilbron shows us that Galileo was far more than a mathematician: he was deeply knowledgeable in the arts, an expert on the epic poet Ariosto, a fine lutenist. More important, Heilbron notes that years of reading the poets and experimenting with literary forms were not mere sidebars--they enabled Galileo to write clearly and plausibly about the most implausible things. Indeed, Galileo changed the world not simply because he revolutionized astronomy, but because he conveyed his discoveries so clearly and crisply that they could not be avoided or denied. If ever a discoverer was perfectly prepared to make and exploit his discovery, it was the dexterous humanist Galileo aiming his first telescope at the sky.

In Galileo, John Heilbron captures not only the great scientist, but also the creative, artistic younger man who would ultimately become the champion of Copernicus, the bête-noire of the Jesuits, and the best-known of all martyrs to academic freedom.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* “Have faith, Galileo, and go forth.” So Kepler urged on his gifted Italian contemporary. But in this insightful biography, Heilbron shows readers that as Galileo heeded Kepler’s urging, he went forth with faith not only in an ingeniously devised telescope but also in poetically inspired words. Readers see the often-forgotten literary side of the great astronomer, the side aflame with a passion for Dante and Ariosto just as ardent as his better-known enthusiasm for Euclid and Archimedes. Heilbron indeed reveals how Galileo’s sometimes-combative advocacy of great literary art prepared him for the rhetorical task of winning converts to Copernican cosmology. For in defending the creative geometry of Dante’s hell against hostile critics, Galileo honed his gift for well-crafted polemics, so priming himself for the task of championing a revolutionary scientific paradigm. For only by developing an imagination as capacious as Dante’s was Galileo able to wrap his mind around a previously undreamed-of universe, governed by radically new heliocentric principles. Of course, many seventeenth-century clerics lacked Galileo’s intellectual daring, and Heilbron teases out the various subplots swirling around the famous confrontation between Galileo and his ecclesiastical antagonists. A complete portrait illuminating how a bold pioneer forged surprising links between science and the humanities. --Bryce Christensen

This will become the DEFINITIVE Biography of one of history's most impactful scientists - 4 Stars
By Richard of Connecticut
Let me sum it up in the beginning of this review for you. This book has 366 pages of narrative in 8 chapters. With footnotes, you are looking at 508 pages. The narrative is thorough, from the great scientist's birth in 1564 to his death in 1642. It is thoroughly researched and there is no question that John Heilbron did his homework objectively. He applied a scholar's eye to an enormous body of work that was created by Galileo.

It is my opinion that if John Heilbron's Galileo suffers from one problem, it is the author's passion for scholarship versus making the subject of his book come alive. In essence, I found I suffered from a certain amount of boredom, and even found some of the reading tedious. This does not detract from the importance of this work, or the fact that nobody else has tackled Galileo in quite a few years.

For most of us growing up, Galileo Galilei was along with Da Vinci, Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein, one of the four most significant scientists to the general public in the last ten centuries. We know Galileo as a mathematician, astronomer, philosopher, and physicist. Perhaps more significantly, he was the man who invented the telescope, and thus along with Christopher Columbus is unique among Italians. Columbus discovered a new world here on earth, and Galileo discoverd new worlds in the heavens.

His importance cannot be overestimated. Look at just a few of the subjects he studied and expanded upon:

* If you want to understand the motion of uniformly accelerated objects, you must look at his work. It is even studied in school today.

* He is probably the dividing line between the old ways of looking at science and what today would be termed modern science.

* Since he is deemed to be the inventor of the telescope, he is probably the most important innovator in the field of observational astronomy. This includes the discovery of four of Jupiter's moons, the largest, plus the confirmation of the phases of Venus, and sunspot observations. Don't forget he also observed the Milky Way galaxy, another first.

* This is the man who took Copernican's view of the sun as the center of our solar system, and ran with it. He ran so hard that it brought him to his knees in front of the Inquisition and it is all covered in this book in exquisite detail. You will finally understand how strongly the Church fought to hold onto its views as the earth as the center of the universe. Not only clerics fought Galileo, but philosophers also.

He was denounced in 1615, and was cleared a year later. The Church warned him to get behind the old theory. Author Heilbron writes in detail how the master scientist went on to preach his views again in "Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems" published in 1632. This time the Inquisition did find him suspect of heresy. After withdrawing his previously held opinions, Galileo was placed under house arrest the rest of his life.

The man we know as Galileo certainly knew how to annoy people. He had been doing it since he was a young man, and as you also know when you do embarrass people with your superior intellect, they are not likely to forget it. These individuals who held pent-up resentments against the scientist got their revenge later on when the renowned thinker was having his difficulties with the Church and others.

In every book I seek to find the one page, paragraph or sentence that makes the book worthwhile for me to read. I found it on page 65 of this book. Cesare Cremonini was a Junior Professor of Philosophy at the University of Padua from 1591 to 1631. In the book Heilbron quotes Cremonini as saying, "Each of us is a microcosm of the universe: hence introspection can deliver knowledge of the world as well as of the self; he who knows himself is a natural philosopher." How profound a statement is this?

My favorite chapters were Chapter 4 on Galilean Science. The sub chapter on the Reluctant Astronomer is very interesting. Chapter 7 Vainglory which is about his problems with the Pope was fascinating.

SUMMARY:

Galileo was a Renaissance man as that term is used today. He was a musician, and a superb artist. He understood foreshadowing, and perspective. He was certainly a draughtsman. He certainly could have been a painter had he chosen to pursue it. He could be a great writer at times and was a world class philosopher. He loved technology, consider his invention of the telescope, and without question, he was into gadgets. He even made a living wholesaling out the telescopes he would create. He sold them to shopkeepers to be sold to others including ship captains. His powers of memory were prodigious. He could recite vast stretches of different writers. These included Dante and Petrarch.

If you want to understand the achievements of one of the great scientists of the millennium, you will not find a better scholarly understanding of Galileo's world than John Heilbron's work. Once again, you will probably have to maintain your own interest level, as opposed to having an author whisk you away on a journey through a book that you can't put down. Thank you for reading this review.

Scholarly, Definitive, Tedious
By Amazon Customer
If you want a comprehensive discussion of Galileo's scientific work, and a thorough discussion of its place in Italian culture of the time, this book is THE book. As a scholarly achievement, it is awe inspiring. The discussion, and occasional fictionalized representations of 17th scientific thinking are wonderful and detailed. I fault the book for style as a biography, not as a work of scholarship. The author takes a tone of arch, ironic detachment towards his subject that is novel and entertaining at first, but which grows immensely tedious after one or two hundred pages. Finally, it becomes, in spite of the fascination of the subject, simply boring.

A great book
By Charles S. Fisher
Thank you John for a truly delightful and deeply informative book about Galileo, his science, personality and struggles with the Church. John and I crossed virtual paths around 1965 when I met Thomas Kuhn at Berkeley on his way to Princeton. John must have been his graduate student then. Kuhn invited me to Princeton where from being a mathematician I practiced history and sociology of science for a while. I ended up teaching at Brandeis for 30 years beginning with trying to illuminate students about the Copernican Revolution and convey some idea of how science works. I have traveled a long way since those days. So coming across John's book was like a breath of fresh air showing how beautifully history of science can be written. First I find his ironic way of jousting with history most entertaining. Little back-handed comments about Galileo's self serving personality left me chuckling. Only someone with a mastery of history can get away with such literary elegance and John certainly is a master. An example of this art are the closing lines of the book referring to the Church's overdoing its resurrection of Galileo parallel to its undoing of him four hundred years before: "According to Galileo's mechanics, the slightest force can move the greatest weight given sufficient time.....Who can doubt that within another 400 years, the church will recognize Galileo's divine gifts, ignore his arrogance, and make him a saint?" And the imaginative dialogue, in the spirit of Galileo, which John creates because of lack of evidence, to explicate what John feels must have been Galileo's basic reasoning about motion.

It was Galileo's arrogance that got him into trouble. Had he not been so sure of his physical and theological ideas, despite the fact he was often wrong, would not admit the priority of others, and stubbornly held on in spite of countervailing evidence, he might have not gotten into trouble. He seemed more interested in shoving his viewpoints down the throats of the Church or the Jesuit and Dominican orders when he could have continued to practice his "science," without asserting it as truth. The Inquisition gave him an out when he was first censured. Not only did he refuse to take it but rubbed salt in the wounds so his eventual recanting and incarceration seemed more personal on the part of a pope who reacted as much as a spurned lover as the enforcer of the faith. And it is in this whole complex that we get a sense that Galileo's "science" was different from what we now associate as science. We cast Bacon and Newton as rationalists where science is defined as being value free hypotheses along with experimental testing which reads only the realities of nature. We forget that Newton spent more time at alchemy then he did inventing the force of gravity. Here is a place that John's book excels. He shows how Galileo and his peers wrestled with their understanding of physical reality as embedded in personal experience, assumptions about existence, "experiments" and beliefs. They selectively threw out Aristotle's reliance on how we experience the world as working---e.g. if resistance to wind slows our pace, then with a vacuum there would be infinite speed--- and replaced with it with reasoning which took them into all kinds of speculative side traps yet within which we see elements of Newton's hypotheses of empty space and laws of gravity and motion. It is easier to see science as embedded in the changing world views of Galileo times than it is today where physics and cosmology have worked their way into such positions of authority that they can command billions of dollars for very questionable endeavors or get supported for spinning out what looks almost like mathematical theology in string theory.

But back to Galileo. As telescope and then microscope maker, his contributions to changing our world are clear. His Medician planets and mountains of the moon and parallax are really world shaking. His arguments about incline planes and gunnery though mixed with faulty reasoning nonetheless made possible the Newtonian revolution. He never quite worked out longitude and his arguments about tides not only disagreed with observation but smacked of Aristotle's reasoning. In the Robert Maynard Hutchins's great books era at the University of Chicago I attended was a three year series of required natural science courses where students read Aristotle, Galileo etc. And though I examed out of those courses, my friends would describe to me how with each book, such as Galileo's "Discourses" they became convinced of its arguments only to be knocked off balance by the next, such as Newton or Descartes. John adds a needed historical context to flesh out those transitions. His portrayal of the characters of Galileo's friends and opponents such as Scarpi, Pope Urban, Galileo's mother, son and daughter are not dull history but live people some of whom were as stubborn and self serving as Galileo both in their science, if they were academicians, and in their personal lives, seeking profit, financial security or fame.

I must confess that my own mathematical training has lapsed over my years of teaching other things, working as a mechanic, electrician, etc and becoming more interested in natural and environmental history, that I had some difficulty following the explications of Galileo's reasoning. John did make it easier by translating a lot but I don't think I have the patience to work through the details any more. I would constantly refer back to my dim memories of undergraduate physics. And though I can generally follow descriptions of relativity and quantum, I find I no longer understand kinematics and dynamics so got confused with what I know to be true physics with Galileo's often erroneous reasoning or obscure arguments. I found it quite interesting that Galileo preferred reasoning from geometry rather than abstract algebra. I am the reverse.

In closing I want to say that I think this is a truly great book in the history of science. When I put the book down, I felt I had met a historian who covered all the bases and also presented the history in a way that was enlivening. I look forward to reading John's books on Planck and Rutherford though they are probably more challenging.

Bhagavad Gita: A New Translation, by Stephen Mitchell

Prince Arjuna faces a dilemma that troubles many people sooner or later - whether to take action that is necessary but morally ambiguous. The difference is that Arjuna's action is to wage war against his own family. With the armies arrayed, Arjuna loses his nerve. Krishna, his charioteer and incarnation of divine consciousness, begins to teach him about the nature of God and of himself. Arjuna learns that he can attain liberation through union with God, and that there are several possible paths to this goal.

This most famous and revered of Hindu scriptures tells the timeless story of the paths of knowledge, devotion, action, and meditation. Stephen Mitchell's acclaimed translation, read by him for the first time, brings this ancient story to life and shows how it became the seed for all the Hindu systems of philosophy and religion that followed.

Translation or interpretive rendering?
By John S. Ryan
I really like Stephen Mitchell's work, but it's important to know what you're getting.
What you're ordinarily _not_ getting is a straight-up translation of the source text; you're getting Mitchell's attempt to render the source text into a fine English poem that expresses the spiritual insights he wants it to express. (Examples: his excellent interpretive renderings of the Psalms and the Tao Te Ching. They are excellent interpretive renderings; they are _not_ translations.)
Even when the translation _is_ straightforward, he tends to chop the text to bits and just keep the parts he agrees with. (Examples: his translation of the book of Genesis, which includes the entire text but relegates the "spiritually suspect" parts to an appendix, and his rendering of the book of Job, which includes some terrific translation but omits the speech of Elihu and the poem in praise of wisdom.)
And now he's done the Bhagavad Gita. Has he translated it, or has he interpretively rendered it?
Well, the first point to make is that he _has_ included the entire text and limited himself to offering commentary on the parts he doesn't agree with. (Incidentally, I tend to disagree with the same parts and I understand that there have been Hindu scholars who have at least raised the same questions that Mitchell does.) This point alone means that Mitchell's Gita is a landmark: he hasn't chopped up the text in order to leave out the "spiritually inferior" portions.
So how good is his translation? Well, Mitchell says his own Sanskrit is "rudimentary," but that doesn't mean (as some reviewers seem to think) that he doesn't know any at all. (This is a bit different from his Tao Te Ching, in which he admits that he just doesn't read Chinese.) And this _is_ called a "new translation" rather than a "new interpretation."
But I don't know any Sanskrit at all, so I've just done some short comparisons with other translations. Based on spot-checks against the versions of Barbara Stoller Miller and Juan Mascaro, it looks to me as though Mitchell has stayed pretty close to the source. This is of course not an expert opinion of any kind and I'm prepared to be corrected by anyone who knows better. (And it may not even be much of a test, as Miller's translation in particular was one of the handful Mitchell consulted in preparing his own.)
Either way, what Mitchell is up to here is what he's up to nearly everywhere: he uses the traditional text as a medium to convey his own spiritual insights. And it's pretty clear from the get-go that he regards Lao-Tzu (i.e., _his_ Lao-Tzu) as spiritually superior to the author(s) of the Gita. Some readers may well agree with this evaluation (and I may be one of them; you guess). But all readers should be aware that Mitchell isn't trying to present a reverent discussion of the teachings of the Gita; he's sifting through it to see what parts of it measure up to his own Buddhist-Taoist-Jewish insights.
I am _not_ criticizing this enterprise; far from it. I tend to agree with many of Mitchell's insights, I really really really enjoy his poetic renderings, and on the whole I even admire his chutzpah (although in other books I've seen reason to criticize some of his scholarship). And in the present work he does, for example, raise (and to some extent answer) deep questions about the limits of nonviolence.
But, y'know, caveat emptor and all that. If you buy this book, buy it as Stephen Mitchell's work, not as an introduction to Hinduism through one of its central sacred texts. It's not really fair to describe this as a "boutique" Gita, but on the other hand it _is_ primarily a vehicle for Mitchell himself. I think that, like all of Mitchell's stuff, it's well worth reading and owning, but it depends on what you're looking for.

Intelligent, accessible and beautifully presented
By Dennis Littrell
First of all this is a beautiful book. The design by Barbara Sturman in which the text is presented in a handsome wine/purple font set in wide margins with the chapter titles in a contemporary font of soft vermillion suggests reverence for the Gita while hinting of a twenty-first century Western appreciation. There is a ribbon sown into the binder for keeping your place.

Second, the emphasis is on the text of the Gita itself garlanded by Mitchell's brief introduction and his "About the Translation" and a most appropriate and valuable appendix, "The Message of the Gita" by Mohandas K. Gandhi from his Collected Works.

Third, there is the translation itself, which is poetic and easily accessible to the contemporary reader without diluting the sacred essence of this great work of spirituality. Mitchell, who has had extensive experience rendering poetic and spiritual works into English, including a much-admired translation of the Tao Te Ching, worked hard at fusing "the dignity of formal verse" into a "sound like natural speech" (p. 32). Rather than go through torturous artificialities in trying to fit all of the text into metric lines, Mitchell has chosen to present some of the Gita in prose. Thus the opening chapter, which he calls "Arjuna's Despair," in which the scene is set and the participants identified, is gracefully told in prose, as is the introduction of the second chapter until Krishna speaks. The effect is beautiful, since it highlights the importance of what Krishna is about to say in a speech that really begins the poem and the teaching. (Shakespeare used this technique.)

Mitchell has solved the problem of the word "yoga," a long time bugaboo for English translators of the Gita, by sometimes using "yoga" and sometimes using "discipline." I certainty appreciate his discretion, having been annoyed for years by those translators who use only "discipline," a word that in many instances misleads the reader and muddies the text with exactly the wrong meaning and connotation. Restricting himself to the word "discipline" alone, as Mitchell explains, "would be an impoverishment." He adds, "how could one expect the reader to keep a straight face at the image of Krishna as the ?" (p. 33). Krishna is indeed the Lord of Yoga.

Mitchell does not attempt to translate some other terms, like "guna," because, "Attempts to find English equivalents...have been uniformly unsuccessful and confuse more than they clarify" (p. 33). Anyone versed in yoga knows that the gunas--sattva, rajas, and tamas--represent something close to an entire philosophy and cannot be understood without some study. The usual rendering as "qualities" or "strands" is tolerable, but, as Mitchell indicates, impoverished, and sometimes leads to a misrepresentation of the text. (See especially 13.21 and compare it with other translations and to the gloss of Sankara, which can be found in the translation by Swami Nikhilanada (1979) published by the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda Center, and elsewhere.) However not all scholars agree with this. Kees Bolle in his translation (1979), published by the University of California Press, insists that "words like , , and must be translated" (p. 226). His concluding essay, "On Translating the Bhagavadgita" is a sharp, candid, and entertaining discussion of some of the problems that translators face.

Where Mitchell runs afoul of some readers is in his worldly attitude toward the Gita as revealed in the introduction, where he uses a story by Borges and a reminiscence by Robert J. Oppenheimer to make a couple of points. He also assumes a somewhat Taoist position. To those not conversant with the Tao Te Ching, Mitchell's statement on page 30, "The healthiest way to begin reading and absorbing a text like the Bhagavad Gita is to understand that ultimately it has nothing to teach," is definitely off-putting. To me Mitchell's position is not a detriment and indeed the only proper stance for a translator is secular. The Gita is a sacred work to Hindus and yogis and others, but to people who practice other religions and who have been raised in other traditions, the Gita, while a great poetic and spiritual work, has to take its place alongside the Bible, the Tao Te Ching, the Koran and other religious works. To others, the Gita is, as it was to T.S. Eliot, simply a great philosophical poem. (Eliot considered it second to Dante's the Divine Comedy.)

Mitchell may also startle some uncritical readers of the Gita with his argument in a footnote on pages 200-202 that the last six chapters are not of the same quality as chapters 1-12. He sees a difference in attitude and finds the last six chapters "much inferior...both poetically and spiritually." I tend to agree, but all venerable religious works are uneven and contain different voices. It is also true that the Gita is repetitious to some extent (although that is not necessarily to its disadvantage as a didactic scripture), and even seemingly contradictory. I believe this is an unavoidable consequence of being complex and of having been passed down through many generations both before and after it was written down.

To those who might find Mitchell not completely qualified to bring yet another translation of the Gita into the English-speaking world because, as he admits on page 30, his "knowledge of Sanskrit is rudimentary," I can only say, his is a fine tradition. I am thinking of the poet W. B. Yeats, who also without much Sanskrit, but with the help of Shree Purohit Swami, wrote a beautiful translation of The Ten Principal Upanishads (1937), and of Christopher Isherwood, also without much Sanskrit, but with the help of Swami Prabhavananda, published a graceful rendition of the Gita (1944).

Bottom line: this is a beautiful and valuable book that would enhance anyone's library, and I recommend it highly.

A beautiful treatment of the Gita
By Dean Dobbert
I am mesmerized as I read this book and find within it the common thread that joins all the great holy books of the world. It is beautifully put together and written in such a fashion that it is a pleasure read. I was concerned about another reviewer's comments about this being an "interpretation" rather than a "translation" of the Gita, and so I sat down and compared several chapters of this book to the translation by Sir Edwin Arnold is a more standard treatment of this text. I found that Stephen Mitchell's version was much more readable and understandable, and yet did not take anything away from the authenticity of the actual text. For anyone wishing to take a slightly different path leading to the nearness to God, I highly recommend picking up this book.

Fair Play, by Steven Landsburg

With his witty and instructive book "The Armchair Economist, " Steven Landsburg won popularity and acclaim by using economics to illuminate the mysteries of daily life, and using daily life to illuminate the mysteries of economics. Now Landsburg returns to address fundamental issues like fairness, tolerance, morality and justice— issues that are as important on the playground as they are in the marketplace. With the help of his daughter, Cayley, he contrasts the wisdom of parents with the wisdom of economists— not always to the credit of the latter. How should we feel about taxes that redistribute income? Ask how parents feel about children who forcibly "redistribute" other children's toys. How should we respond to those who complain that their neighbors are too wealthy? Ask how parents respond when children complain that their siblings got too much cake. By insisting that fairness can't mean one thing for children and another for adults, Landsburg shows that the instincts of the parent have profound consequences for economic justice. Along the way, Landsburg— with his customary sharp wit and challenging logic— pauses to reflect on an astonishing variety of issues in economic theory, the philosophy of parenting, the true nature of family values, and how to get the most out of life. He uses parent-child interactions to explain the economics of free trade and immigration, progressive taxation, minimum wages, racial discrimination, and the role of money. He makes the best possible philosophical cases for and against progressive taxation, and weighs them against the wisdom of the playground. He explains why children are a good thing, and why economictheory tells us we don't have enough of them. He meditates on the role of authority in our lives, the effects of cultural bias, and why it's important to read poetry to your children. This lively and entertaining book will inform and delight readers who have forgotten the human side of the dismal science.

From Kirkus Reviews
Another collection of brash, intelligent essays on economics by the author of The Armchair Economist (1993). Landsburg, a columnist for the online magazine Slate, turns his hand to demystifying everyday economics, using his nine-year- old daughter as a sounding board. While his exchanges with Cayley can turn overly sentimental, Landsburg's sharp wit and sharper insight make this a fun read for anyone with a taste for logic and unbiased opinions. Landsburg begins a discussion on NAFTA by debunking the notion that the number of workers who quit their jobs because of pay cuts represents the true cost of foreign competition. It's the workers who stay and take a pay cut, he argues, who are the real losers, because they bear the full brunt of the loss in wages. He later points out that while some would argue that it's unfair to the $16-an-hour worker to lose a job to a $3-an-hour worker, it's actually the public who, from the point of view of pure economics, has been cheated: They've been overpaying for products made by overpriced workers. At times, Landsburg risks sounding like a curmudgeon: He's irritated that Cayley's teachers dictate on the environment, sex, and drugs. But he rightly points out that even the best-intentioned environmental lesson often consists simply of memorizing the number of acres of rainforest lost, rather than a more complex analysis of land use. His best response is saved for Cayley's Hebrew school class: When asked to write an essay that begins ``To be more like God, I will . . .'' students penned treacly lines such as ``I will be kind to animals.'' Landsburg's stinging response: ``I will slay the first born of my enemies.'' Often funny and at times poetic, these essays are eminently readable and always smart. Review
... a lively and provocative look at everything from trade policy to environmentalism to affirmative action.... In a clever and accessible way, he exposes a lot of bad economic reasoning that even Barney could see through. -- The Wall Street Journal, Todd G. Buchholz

Milton Friedman An ingenious and highly original presentation of some central principles of economics for the proverbial Everyman. Its breezy tone conceals the subtlety of the analysis. Guaranteed to puncture some illusions and to make you think. -- Review

This University of Chicago-educated mathematician and economist is a serious academic. But his true gifts lie elsewhere: He makes complicated economic and public policy issues accessible to a general audience and, like Hazlitt before him, forces the reader to challenge previously unexamined assumptions that muddle public debate.... The book's breezy tone and light-hearted title belie the thoughtfulness and scholarly sophistication that undergird almost every assertion that Landsburg makes, no matter how outrageous. The book is part primer on economics and public policy, part tutorial on the value of skeptical inquiry. -- Reason, Nicholas Schulz

A "must read" for people who like to use their brains.
By A Customer
As a parent and a citizen-of-earth, I enjoyed (almost) every page of this book. Landsburg helps the reader to think through some issues which are much more "black and white" than our society seems to think they are. Seeking for truth? Be careful of what you wish for. Some of the truths that Landsburg finds in his daughter's life and the way he wants to bring her up will shine some light in corners you may not want to look at. In particular, I was very moved by his views on how our society treats the most productive and successful among us. You will never listen to a Bill Gates joke the same way again. I loved this book! After borrowing it from a friend, I am buying my own copy. Worth owning and worth reading!

Overrated
By Daniel Harper
I probably would have liked this book better had the author not adopted such a smug attitude of moral and intellectual superiority. I also feel sorry for his daughter if he truly interacts with her as he claims.

best book ever written on economics and everyday life
By Ross Nordeen
Numerous books have been written on applying economics to everyday life, but Steve Landsburg's latest book employs a paradigm that puts it head and shoulders above the rest. His interactions with his daughter Cayley put a fascinating spin on things as her experiences and actions are filtered through the eyes of an economist. Landsburg points out again and again how we hold adults to a different, and lower, standard than we hold children, how we tell things to other adults that we would never say to a child and that adults accept excuses and reasoning from other adults that we would never accept from children.
Landsburg sometimes departs from the father-daughter paradigm to discuss issues that don't always fit in the with the rest of the book, but are fascinating none-the-less. Landsburg has a talent for making you think about an issue in novel ways. His analysis of minimum wage laws is clever and principled and nothing like you've ever heard before. Landsburg sheds the same critical light on everything from affirmative action to the rights of the unconceived.
But this is more than a book about economics. It's about what principles we want to use to guide our lives. It's about families. It's about a lot of other things too, but it's especially about fun. If you don't laugh out loud several times while reading this book, you need to have your head examined. Only the most determined curmudgeon could read this without cracking a smile at least once.
