This cannot happen until Linux clustered solutions, or "clusters," are introduced and de-mystified for mainstream system administrators and IT solution architects. In this book, we examine some of the architectures, processes, and collections of technologies that may be used to build clustered Linux systems. We examine the reasons that Linux may make the best choice as the base operating system for a cluster. We will do this while attempting to avoid the assumptions and jargon that currently make building Linux clusters the domain of a small club of high-performance computing specialists. Learning to build Linux clusters is a journey, like learning any other complex technical task. One of the most difficult parts in any journey is just getting started. There is a folk saying that goes something like, "A map does you no good if you don't know where you are." This book will pick a starting point, identify some of the opportunities for Linux cluster solutions, define a process for creating a cluster solution, introduce you to some of the necessary components, and give concrete examples of cluster design and construction.

About This Book

The intent of this book is to provide an introduction to clustered Linux systems for an audience that may not have any experience working with this type of solution. A cluster comprises multiple physical systems, interconnected and configured to act in concert with each other as if they were a single resource. Throughout, I assume a basic understanding of computer hardware, network, and operating system concepts or the ability to research required topics. I do not, however, assume previous experience with clustered systems.

This book is not intended to be an introduction to Linux system administration or TCP/IP network administration. I will make every attempt to point you to appropriate reference books and external sources of information as we proceed. Experience administering Linux or Unix systems and an understanding of network connections is essential to getting the most useful information from this book.

This book attempts to tie together the "big picture" for those system administrators and system architects that already understand the individual elements of that picture. Our goal is to learn how to configure and use Linux subsystems and tools on multiple physical computers to create the appearance of a single system "clustered" solution. This is a potentially complex endeavor that relies foremost on understanding the basic operation of the Linux operating system and subsystems which may involve network connections.

Notation and Conventions

Throughout this book we will examine only clusters based on the Linux operating system. Indeed, that is why the title of the book is "Building Clustered Linux Systems." To avoid the constant repetition of the phrases "Linux clusters" and "Linux cluster," wherever I use the term "cluster" I am referring to a Linux cluster, unless specifically noted otherwise.

Whenever I need to illustrate Linux commands, subsystem names, command-line options, or URLs for Web sites, I will use the courier font to set the information apart from regular text. I will use the courier italic font for text that requires specific values to be substituted, such as "-kickstart". Both bold and italic are used in the text for emphasis.

Using This Book

The initial chapter introduces the concept of a cluster and defines the term "cluster" as we will use it. Part one introduces the hardware components that make up a cluster, along with an architectural model that shows the relationship between the individual hardware components in various types of clusters. Part two applies Linux and open-source software to the software architecture of a cluster, pointing out available solutions and approaches. Part three discusses the economics and physical construction of cluster hardware, detailing the design and implementation details.

If you are an experienced system architect, and are anxious to get right to the Linux part of building clusters, start out with part two. If you wish to review hardware components and cluster architecture, begin at part one and progress through the remainder of the book. If you want to see details and processes for implementing clusters, you may start with part three, then progress to parts one and two, as desired.

About the Author

Robert W. Lucke, a former solution architect for HP's Technical Consulting Organization, worked on one of the world's largest Linux clusters at Pacific Northwest National Laboratories. Robert specializes in UNIX development, performance tuning, interoperability, technical computing architectures, and large-scale system management. He brings more than twenty-two years of experience to the analysis and design of complex hardware and software environments and is also a Red Hat Certified Engineer.

Finally a good Linux Clustering book

This book is very well organized, gets right to the point, has some dry humor (a tradition in technical books) but its not overdone (overdoing it is also a tradition). You really couldn't ask for more. The thing I like most about this book, is the author is very direct. I have some experience with the publishing industry, and authors are *PAID BY THE PAGE*. Which gives them a tremendous incentive to dilute the material into unreadable crap. This author avoids this and deserves the highest praise for doing so.

Outstanding value

This book is a very straightforward, clearly written and valuable introduction to Linux clustering. Geared toward system folks, it also provides numerous `on-ramps' into the basics of clustering to accommodate quick, relevant review of supporting technology for the reader. It is essentially a map for getting from start to finish in any Linux cluster project. Specific situations, conditions, and expectations differ across projects, of course, and such points are identified well in the text with pointers to additional information provided.

Scientific computing (HPC) is addressed well, and is more of the topic than any other cluster flavor, though the others are discussed as well (after all, who wouldn't want a side order of high availability with their HPC?). My cluster background personally was mostly high availability (Microsoft Wolfpack), so I appreciated the HPC overview, especially since I was already building a Linux cluster for my bio-algorithms that depended on HPC. This book helped me get every gflop out of my admittedly 2ndhand student hardware.

If you are getting involved with a cluster project or have one potentially on the horizon, and need a clear overview of what may lay ahead, pick up this book. For its measly sticker price, you get two solid discussion weeks with an expert. Go calculate that one:)

Hard to beat. Full Marks !!

The book describes in simple reproducable steps how to build a medium to medium big sized cluster. It also devides the clusters into the three main types,

HPC *High performance computing,
High Throughput and
High Availability cluster

and describes their usages. The book is describing cluster projects more from a bird view and gives a whole sight overview including budget calculations, comparing several architectures also by their technology and environmental conditions (Power usage, Cooling requirements etc.).

The book is not only hard to beat but also the perfect companion to the Linux Enterprise Cluster from Karl Kopper. While Karls book is a bit more practical it concentrates only on the technical configuration of "small" clusters.

Here is where Lubke comes in and extends that knowledge by the many environmental factors *Budget, technical considerations, Calculations, Estimates, Planning what to expect from your hardware *Performance, Weight, Heat, Flooring considerations etc.

After you read the book, you will have learned all necessary steps to build your own clusters. The "only" thing left to you is to put the ship to water ;-)

an old standard...

I am a violin and piano teacher for kids. I use a combination of Suzuki and traditional material as well as music that I write for my students. String Builder, Belwin's Course for Strings, is an old standard. I like it because it is a common sense way to learn to read notes and get some basic theory. It's not thrilling for me or my students--just one of those necessary things. And for that, It's good.

Delightful surprise

I love Regency romances and have a high standard for the ones I consider "keepers". I don't really like the Jane imitators and don't usually read them. Forget all of these snide remarks of mine and settle down for a great read with "Friendship and Folly". When you find a book that made you laugh at loud, gnash your teeth, and tear up (not all at the same time) then you know you want to read more of that author. I'm only sorry that this seems to be the only book by Meredith Allady.

Worth it but not a romance

I'm surprised and not by the unabashed endorsement of the other reviewers. While Friendship and Folly is certainly an enjoyable read it is by no means a five star book, at least not when compared to truly good writing.

But I can totally see this author getting better, more polished and really achieving writing worth of fandom. The book's best attribute is its characters, especially Ann and Clive from whom the funniest lines and the most human frailty come from.

I also enjoyed the unhurried descriptions and tangents the story takes now and again. The writing style is evocative of Austen and Heyer but not even approaching the level of these literary giants. Though I'd definitely read another book by the author. I liked it. I liked it very well. And I might even reread it, which is the highest compliment I can pay it.

The three things I took issue with are as follows:
The romance is not center stage. It's not even on stage.
It's wordy. So much so that I had to reread a few incredibly long run on sentences up to three times.
I wish Ann was the heroine, she is much more the stuff heroines are made of than Julia.
I don't know how to classify it, it's not romance, comedy of manners, drama, comedy. It's good, I just don't know what it is.

Go ahead, buy it, you'll enjoy it.

For those who care the language is clean and the bedroom door firmly shut.

Good, old-fashioned type of book

I really enjoyed this book! Obviously there will be a second book forthcoming, probably with Anne having her own romance...It's written something in a style similar to Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer...A sort of comedy/romance.

I was really pleased to finally find another book by Meredith Allady today available for free Kindle download at Smashwords! It's called "Letters from Bath; Or, A Friend in Exile". I haven't read it yet but am hoping it will be as good as "Friendship and Folly"!

A Must-Have for Every Instructional Designer's Desktop

Ruth Colvin Clark is our foremost translator of research on instructional design into practical, plain-language guidance for instructional design practitioners. In this book, Dr. Clark takes on the daunting challenge of making sense out of a generation of groundbreaking research on teaching of complex problem-solving and expertise. This is the high-value segment of the training enterprise: at every level of every organization, there is a handful of “MVP’s” who are capable of solving the non-standard problems: the problems that have the highest value to the organization – and the highest cost, if they are not solved efficiently and effectively. The conventional wisdom is that this kind of expertise can’t be taught; it can only be learned through a decade of apprenticeship and experience. Yet often, the enterprise’s need for this kind of expertise isn’t even recognized by the training specialists, who instead focus on grinding out low-level information and procedure training – ever faster, and ever cheaper, often with little attention to its ultimate value to the enterprise.

Dr. Clark shows us how advances in our understanding of complex problem solving and expertise have led to practical approaches to problem-based learning and assessment. She refers to the family of learning environments with this purpose as scenario-based e-Learning. These learning environments have the potential to teach what was formerly considered unteachable, and to accelerate and regularize the development of expertise for the highest-value competencies found in each level of the enterprise, from the call center and the sales team, to the manufacturing and maintenance groups, to the design and consulting teams, and to the corporate leaders: arguably, the “secret sauce” of any enterprise.

This is not your father’s training design. Well-designed scenarios accurately capture the way an expert thinks about problem-solving: what they notice, what principles they use to make decisions as they weigh cost, risk, and benefit of multiple options (often with no uniquely “right” solution). They place trainees in a relatively unstructured, more realistic environment, and give them the opportunity to work their way to a solution in much the way an expert does. This is a far cry from the usual tell-show-do strategy employed for procedure training. Instead, the training is typically built around a progression of simple to complex problem solving activities, each of which involves multiple decision paths and choices among alternative strategies. The problem solutions may or may not converge on a single “answer.” In this kind of training, trainees learn from their mistakes, by reflecting on how they thought about the problem.

Dr. Clark lays out in a simple format the key properties of problem-solving environments. She is careful to contrast these environments from the familiar direct instruction models. Equally important, she weighs carefully the available research on best practices in design, and the options for various design approaches to matters such as defining the goal of the training, defining the problem, rendering it in a learning environment, and designing the various forms of structure and feedback available. She is careful not to go beyond available research by advocating for some design options over others, but simply describes the options and their properties and the benefits suggested from research. Perhaps most important, she repeatedly cautions that the design practices she describes can be implemented at almost any level of media production, from a loose-leaf binder with tabs, to an elaborately realistic multimedia piece.

The easiest thing to build is the wrong problem-based learning activity. All you have to do is to make unjustified assumptions about the skills you are teaching and your instructional design. Some of the most crucial parts of scenario-based e-learning design, however, are left for the “advanced” chapters at the end of the book. Readers who want their training products to be effective must take care not to overlook these final chapters, especially those on eliciting expert knowledge, on what we know about what makes e-Learning work, and on evaluation strategies.

Unlike so many authors of training textbooks, Dr. Clark follows her own advice and presents numerous screen captures of actual products, to provide multiple examples of the most important characteristics of these products. Considering how difficult it is to obtain examples and to capture their complexity on the pages of a book, the examples alone earn for the book a place on every instructional designer’s desk.

Dr. Clark succeeds masterfully in her goal of introducing design of problem-based learning to instructional design professionals. Of necessity, topics such as use of rapid prototyping for early validation of designs, use of problem-based environments for assessment, representation of knowledge structures and their translation into problem activities, and options for implementing these designs in software, receive only a light treatment. The larger the project, and the more complex and ill-structured the problem-solving skills being taught, the more important topics such as these become. However, Dr. Clark implicitly assumes that her readers will start small: perhaps a 20-minute problem solving activity embedded in an e-learning course would be something readers of this book might want to tackle at first.

And finally, Dr. Clark’s careful reading of the research literature with a pragmatic instructional designer’s viewpoint simultaneously demonstrates how much we have learned about this family of instructional strategies – and how much more there is to learn. We can only hope that researchers who read the book will take the hint.

Great Book

I love most of Ruth Colvin Clark's books, and this book was no exception. Unlike some of her previous books, this one focuses on a very specific type of training: scenario-based elearning. The strategies and suggestions are useful for this type of elearning, but if you're looking for strategies that apply to a broader swath of training types, I'd suggest E-Learning and the Science of Instruction or Evidence-Based Training Methods instead.

COOKING SLOW MEANS COOKING WITH FLAVOR

I like to cook but am not an amateur chef. Still, I like to cook. So when I find a cookbook that looks interesting, I at least consider acquiring it. Thus this book, which I bought in anticipation of cooking for Christmas 2013. To date (February 5, 2014), I have tried four recipes and loved them all. I have several others lined up to try soon. It is tricky to predict success solely on the basis of success with a sampling of a cookbook's recipes but the omens are good.

I made posole, a Mexican stew containing pork shoulder cubes, lots of shrimp, hominy, peppers, onions, garlic, and tomatoes. It cooked in the oven at 200 degrees for six hours and it was exquisite! -subtle yet earthy, a bonanza of good tastes that, because of the slow low temperature cooking, still were distinct. I've made the posole twice now, once for us, once for guests, and both times it has been a hit. The first time, I substituted garbanzo beans for hominy, and it tastes fine. The second time I used the traditional hominy (posole).

I have also prepared prime rib and mac and cheese using this book, and they were both better than I have achieved using other methods -a lot better. The mac and cheese was amazing. After hours of slow cooking in the oven, the kitchen smells heavenly and the taste is wonderful. It was even better than my wife's time honored recipe. I think she's going to convert to new techniques the next time she makes hers.

The author's comments throughout this book make sense -about the effects of temperature and moisture on the end product, about c0ooking in general. They resonate with me on several levels and by now I'm not a novice. The book is intelligently laid out, with attractive visual presentations of dishes, well explained recipes and intelligent sidebars on variant recipes and other matters.

I have a list of recipes yet to try. It includes a cheesecake that cooks in the oven overnight for eight to ten hours at 175 degrees and ends up, so the book says, creamy even at the edge, never cracked and never dry because never over-baked. There are carrots slow baked on top of coffee beans (three hours at 225 degrees), a turkey chili that looks to die for (eight hours at 200 degrees), a duck ragu with cherries over fettucine (the ragu cooks in the oven for seven hours at 250 degrees), borscht (6-1/2 hours, on the counter top at the lowest possible simmer), and fettucine with lamb Bolognese (250 degrees in an oven for six hours).

I will be using this book for a long, long time --and for good reason. Because cooking slowly makes sense: both in terms of the nutrients saved and the flavors amplified and made more intense and savory.

Mr. Schloss writes good books. In this one, he discusses the topic of slow cooking clearly and offers some excellent recipes. He makes a distinction between slow cooking and cooking in a slow cooker. Having done that, he provides guidelines for using a slow cooker to approximate the outcomes of stove-top or oven slow cooking and offers suggestions for converting some of his slow cooking recipes to slow cooker recipes.

put them in and leave them - my only problem is they take longer than
the 6 hours so no one knows when twe are going to eat - but if youre not on a timetable
then they are great.
