Forty Stories (Vintage Classics), by Anton Chekhov

If any writer can be said to have invented the modern short story, it is Anton Chekhov. It is not just that Chekhov democratized this art form; more than that, he changed the thrust of short fiction from relating to revealing. And what marvelous and unbearable things are revealed in these Forty Stories. The abashed happiness of a woman in the presence of the husband who abandoned her years before. The obsequious terror of the official who accidentally sneezes on a general. The poignant astonishment of an aging Don Juan overtaken by love. Spanning the entirety of Chekhov's career and including such masterpieces as "Surgery," "The Huntsman," "Anyuta," "Sleepyhead," "The Lady With the Pet Dog," and "The Bishop," this collection manages to be amusing, dazzling, and supremely moving—often within a single page.

Review
I long to embrace, to include in my own short life, all that is accessible to man. I long to speak, to read, to wield a hammer in a great factory, to keep watch at sea, to plow. I want to be walking along the Nevsky Prospect, or in the open fields, or on the ocean -- wherever my imagination ranges."

Superb translations; the English flows
By Rosa La Luna
I like Robert Payne's translations of Chekhov because he has a good ear for the flow of beautiful writing. He does not bog Chekhov's prose down with needless commas like Constance Garnett and others. Payne's Chekhov reads seamlessly. He understands that good storytelling is about how the words flow together as in speech. Beautiful translations. (By the way, they are perfect for teaching Chekhov to high school or college students.)

Fragments and Sketches of a Russian Perspective
By Ian Vance
Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) has long been acknowledged as one of Russia's greatest playwrights and short story authors, a man whose expressiveness with the pen stemmed, in great part, from the hardship of his childhood experiences and, later in life, his vast globetrotting wanderings. Chekhov's family abandoned him at the age of sixteen to a fate somewhat close to wage-slavery; astonishingly, he later assumed complete responsibility for their indiscretions, and thereafter always faced financial difficulties. To help supplement his income, Chekhov began writing professionally for magazines, and over the course of his life came to scribe more than two hundred short stories. This collection, as suggested by the title, consists of forty pieces, of varying length and quality: the title is somewhat misleading, as several of these 'stories' are barely a page long and would be more aptly described as 'fragments', or, to take a cue from Turgenev, 'sketches' of Russian existence...although, in a sense, all of these stories could be described thus. With wit, compassion and keen insightfulness, the author paints a painfully accurate portrait of the Russian character: hardy, proud, generally inconsistent and very often drunken; and Russian environment, from the fertile luxury of the Crimea to the frozen wasteland exile of Siberia, from provincial predicaments to cityscape cluster-catastrophes. Like his contemporaries Gogol, Turgenev and Tolstoy, Chekhov wrote as he saw it, and his fiction now exists as literature - an invaluable testament of a bygone age.
*Forty Stories* covers Chekhov's artistic span from 1880-1903. The progression of skill and storytelling becomes readily apparent as one ploughs deeper into the text: with the exception of Green Scythe, the first third of this book is generally underwhelming, given the author's reputation. Many of the pieces in this section fall under the fragment banner, too small and sparse for effective insight or even basic narrative enjoyment. From 'The Huntsman' on, however, the stories gradually gain expert polish, with wonderful descriptiveness and a strong sense of character, and the last seven or so are probably the best of the collection. Yet I still advise one to read this from beginning to end - there are a few gems in the beginning section, and the evolution of Chekhov's technique is in itself interesting to observe.
An overview of some of the best stories:
Green Scythe: Every summer the Princess of a certain villa at Green Scythe summons a host of gentlemen for vacation and entertainment. One of them (the least favored by the Princess) eventually falls in love with her daughter, and the rest of the men conspire to bring the two together in holy matrimony.
Sergeant Prishibeyev: The military man of the title has been drawn up before court for disturbing the peace. Between the lines, one receives a feeling of how difficult it was for some members of the Russian military to return to a 'normal' life after the severe discipline and absolute authority of their previous incarnation; also expressed is the Sergeant's inability to cope with changing times/customs.
Who is to Blame?: Using a kitten and a certain severity of 'training', Chekhov fashions a Pavlovian metaphor about how creatures are molded due to external stresses, and makes the point that the influence of this molding tends to continue long after the principle act.
The Princess: This story concerns a spoiled, delusional member of the noble class (a true 'Princess,' in the derogatory sense) and her visit to a monastery for rest and recuperation. There she encounters a doctor of her former employment, who promptly unleashes a maelstrom of resentment about her general way of life and, in particular, her callous treatment of her fellow man. In this rant Chekov depicts the common mistreatment of serfs by their masters; the ending comes as a bit of a shock, but true to the characters of both the Princess, the doctor, and the prevalent social requirements of that time.
Sleepyhead: Mistreatment of servants is again examined, as is the gradual strain of sleep-depravation. Varka the nursemaid is forced to operate without rest for days on end, tending the samovar, the fire, and most pertinent of all, the baby. Eventually her willpower snaps, with murderous consequence...
Big Volodya and Little Volodya: This story begins with an interesting phenomenon: the sentimentality of alcohol, its illusionary rise and fall. A love triangle between two worldly men (the Big and Little Volodyas) and a very silly little fool (Sonya) commences, though the husband is of course ignorant to the cuckoldry. Sonya's character is vividly drawn: a fascinating portrait of someone despicably selfish, pathetically ignorant and ever so determined to 'purify' her indiscretions via the quick fix of prayer and Godly devotion.
Anna Round the Neck: A young woman uses her natural beauty to elevate herself from squalor-beginnings to the highest circles of society. Family is left on the wayside, at first unwillingly, and then with wise calculation.
The Lady with the Pet Dog: An aging Don Juan seduces yet another lonely wife - one more notch for the bedpost - but discovers that even the most insatiable satyr-instinct can crumble before the impulse of love...
The Bride: A young woman narrowly escapes a small-town existence for the larger world; when she returns home, full of dread and nostalgic reminisce, she comes to realize that what she left behind was, in the long run, a worthy sacrifice.
...
For those interested in Russian history of the 19th century, Anton Chekhov is a bookshelf necessity. Despite several pieces of fragmentary fluff, *Forty Stories* is a good overview of the master's best work.

Excellent collection, well formatted, a joy to read.
By Ian Carr
If you are a Chekhov fan already, or, like I was, interested in getting acquainted with one of the best modern writers for the first time this is a good book for you. Does not suffer from the problems (poor translation, unreadably small type, etc.) some of the other collections of Chekhov's short stories do. Excellent value, good translation, nice formatting and wonderful stories.

Blah . . .
By danielle.
I was hooked on this series with the first four books and had this installment on pre-order for months . . . I devoured the other books in a matter of hours, but this one didn't keep me hooked. I kept putting the book down, doing other things and then forcing myself to pick it back up again. It took me several weeks to get through it because I had to force myself to read it, it felt like homework.

My main issues with the book is the annoying narration and the constant back-tracking. It's a series, we know it's a series--this is book 5 we know the characters already! The narration is awful, the voices are not authentic to teens and instead sound more like adults trying to sound like teenagers. And how many times can Z say things like "that's my friend, he's gay, not that there's anything wrong with that . . ." who talks like that? We get it, everyone loves everyone, no one is intolerant--there are valuable lessons to be learned there, but the delivery falls flat.

The plot dragged on and on and on . . . and in the end, we're left hanging again. I assume the next book will be more of the same boy problems and the same predictable plot . . .I think I'll move on to Kelly Armstrong's novels or Claudia Gray's . . . this will be my last of PC & Kristen's series . . .

nice book
By Linz
I love the house of night book series. Hunted was a great book as was the others in the series. Its written for young adults I believe but I am not a young adult anymore and I liked these books a lot. If you like magic, and vampires you will probably like this book. Its not like most vampire books it's quite a bit different, and has a lot of twists and turns throughout the series.

First Disappointment in a Cast Novel
By BeadCatz
Wow, never would I have thought I would be disappointed with a P.C. Cast novel but I was with this one. Like many others, I anxiously awaited this book to be released only to be disappointed, shortly after I began the novel.

I think the most difficult portion for me was the way Zoey was written in this book. The strength that I had loved about her in the previous novels was diminished somewhat plus she was slightly selfish and self centered especially when it came to "all" the guys in her life.

The previous book left me glad that she was finally over Heath and hoping that she and Eric would work things out. Those two characters seemed well matched. But, in this novel, not only does Heath enter her life once more but, again, she has imprinted with him. Then there's Stark, a guy, seemingly out of nowhere that we are sure is a villain, but he is thrown in with Zoey so once again, we have a love triangle. Honestly, it was "very" annoying and I can not believe we now have Zoey lusting after three guys once again.

And finally, the usual P.C. Cast humorous writing style was sadly missing in this installment. There were a few places that the humor came through but they were very rare and even those were not the "laugh out loud" sections that I have come to love about Ms. Cast's writing.

I really hope the next installment goes back to its original form. While the technical aspects of the author's writing were still good as usual, her plot, characters, and endearment were not there.

I will buy the next installment but if it does not improve, then that will be the last installment of House of Night that I will ever purchase.

Stan and Jan Berenstain were both born in 1923 in Philadelphia.  They didn't know each other as children, but met later at school, at the Philadelphia College of Art.  They liked each other right away, and found out that the both enjoyed the same kinds of books, plays, music and art.  During World War II, Stan was a medical assistant in the Army, and Jan worked in an airplane factory.  When the war was over, they got married and began to work together as artists and writers, primarily drawing cartoons for popular magazines.  After having their two sons Leo and Michael, the Berenstains decided to write some funny children's books that their children and other children could read and enjoy.  Their first published children's book was called The Big Honey Hunt .  It was about a family of bears, who later became known as the "Berenstain Bears".

Since their inception, the Berenstain Bears stories have expanded to include picture books, beginning readers, and chapter books--even a hit TV show on PBS. Writing and illustrating the books has become a Berenstain family affair. Mike joined with his parents as a creative team in the late 1980s. The Bear family has expanded over the years as well. Sister Bear arrived in 1974, and baby Honey joined the family in 2000.

Though Stan died in 2005 and Jan in 2012, Mike continues to create the delightful Berenstain Bear adventures from his studio in Pennsylvania.

Book of Yakub: Father of the Caucasian People, by Rasheed L. Muhammad

According to the teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, the man Yakub lived 6,600 years ago in the holy land of the east. He lived to be 150 years of old. Yakub is hidden in the Christian Bible under the name Jacob. This man opposed the righteous government of his day. In the book of Genesis 32, the righteous government is symbolically hidden under the name angel. The ancient black people of Egypt referred to Yakub’s people as Sea People. The Christian bible symbolically hid Yakub’s made man or white race or people under the name Caphtorites coming out from Caphtor (Crete). These people entered parts of the holy land thousands of years ago to destroy it. [Deutoromny 2:23] “And as for the Avvites who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorites coming out from Caphtor destroyed them and settled in their place.” Mr. Yakub was a scientist or god. The vile world government structure we live under today is rooted in his idea or literature or writings he prepared 6,600 years ago. Prophet Moses (Musa) also taught to Yakub’s people, 4,000 years ago, various parts that they had forgotten. Yakub understood the genetic (gene) nature of self and/or the original black nation. The word “gene” is often used to refer to our hereditary human traits. In genetics, these traits are either PP—black dominant, Bp—brown, red, yellow incomplete dominance or aa—wrinkle (pale) recessive. Therefore, a white race was made based upon the number six (i.e., 6 variations of the gene combinations), through the act of sex or breeding the incomplete dominance into its final recessive trait. By this knowledge, he (Yakub) was successful in making a new race of people 6,000 ago called the white race. The warning book Yakub prepared for his race that they may see their day of Judgement contains 403 verses and 22 chapters i.e., Bible Book of Revelations. Brother Malcolm X once said, "I know its hard to believe....but, it true. (Smile)"

As Seen on TV: The Visual Culture of Everyday Life in the 1950s, by Karal Ann Marling

America in the 1950s: the world was not so much a stage as a setpiece for TV, the new national phenomenon. It was a time when how things looked--and how we looked--mattered, a decade of design that comes to vibrant life in As Seen on TV. From the painting-by-numbers fad to the public fascination with the First Lady's apparel to the television sensation of Elvis Presley to the sculptural refinement of the automobile, Marling explores what Americans saw and what they looked for with a gaze newly trained by TV. A study in style, in material culture, in art history at eye level, this book shows us as never before those artful everyday objects that stood for American life in the 1950s, as seen on TV.

"Life In The Age Of Television Was A Feast For The Eye..."
By Anthony G Pizza
Karal Ann Martling tucks her mission in writing "As Seen On TV" in that last sentence of the next-to-last chapter of her fascinating book. She tours the 1950s' TV-raised images, from First Lady Mamie Eisenhower's dress closet to her husband's paintings to garish car in the garage, ready-made food in the kitchen, and herky-jerky TV images pointing to changed American culture and aestetic. Hers is a more entertaining, breezier read than recent books from, respectively, David Halberstam on the 1950s or historian Michael Kammen on American preference.(Marling shared time at Cornell with Kammen, thanking his students in her acknowledgements for "challenging lunchtime conversation.")
Marling merges era icons, fads, and seminal events more seamlessly into social statement than Halberstam did or Kammen attempted. Her understanding of cars evolving into social statements segues best into the image of Elvis Presley, the "King of Rock and Roll" for whom the "gorp"-covered Cadillac was chariot of choice. (she also credits Martin and Lewis with exposing the entertainment's dual sensibilities during early TV).
Marling also writes of home convenience from new appliances and quick dinners colliding with the rustic, more honorable life many felt had been replaced. This clash inspired and popularized Grandma Moses' idealized portraits of American country life, Walt Disney's scale model re-creation of small-town America at Disneyland (and on the accompanying TV program), and Betty Crocker's shorthand version of motherly mentoring through General Mills' best-selling cookbook. Marling's chapter on Walt Disney's inspirations for creating the park is among the book's most fascinating. But a chapter on "American Bandstand," should Marling have chosen to include it, may have tied even more loose ends together.
The book may also have done with some re-arrangement; the closing chapter accurately and humorously chronicles the 1959 Richard Nixon-Nikita Krushchev "kitchen debate." But its tale of form of function, argued by its most important leaders at the peak of Cold War hysteria, may have been more effective introducing Marling's tale. The book may then have received more social context by stating sooner Nixon's belief, according to Marling, in "style as a manifestation or a symbol of difference and, in difference, multiplicity - the possibility of choice - as...connecting idle consumer fetishism to ideology." This would also have more closely tied the 1950s' garish color imagery with its parallel, grainier black-and-white images (Nixon, the Cold War, and Joe McCarthy, a standout 50s figure seen on TV but not in this book.) Nonetheless, "As Seen On TV" is a fun, informative read for those wishing to understand the reasoning behind an era's unforgettable images.

Very interesting book with wonderful photographs

Very interesting reading. It is amazing to actually see how television has changed American life. I can't even fathom how life would be today, without TV. A great read for all who are interested in American pop culture in the 1950s.

Very interesting read
By Josie Louise
I was born in the 60s but have always had an interest in the 50s. This book gave me some feel for it. Everything from food to Elvis getting his hair cut, to those big wings on cars is here. Even the paint-by-numbers craze is written up. There is a chapter on Disneyland 1955 too. The "New Look" is here, that fashion style after the war. There arent tons of pics, and what there are are black and white.
