I wish Lydia wasn't so dumb.. lol

I will start out by saying that Lydia is the dumbest of all the Bennet sisters. I don't understand why she didn't think her actions would have a consequence. And then Lizzy has to take over the burden of trying to save the family's reputation while Lydia doesn't even give it a second thought. Jane does know about Lydia's stupidity but does almost nothing to help Lizzy out with the problem other than fretting about it.

I believe that the characters would have acted the same if this situation had happen in the original novel. While I understand why Lizzy didn't want to involve her father or uncle in the situation I believe they could have resolved the problem faster than she did. It was truly a man's world until the last 50 years or so. And bravo to Jane to growing a backbone. I enjoyed this story very much. So much that I couldn't put it down.

Well written, engaging "Pride and Prejudice" adaptation that even Austen would enjoy!

Ms. Swan is my favorite author in this genre, and "Darcy's Wager" is my favorite among her books so far. I've read all of her books except the "Honey" series written as H.Y. Hanna. In my opinion, she is the most authentic, modern day voice of Ms. Austen, and writes convincingly of the time period with a similar tongue and cheek parody Austen is famous for. Darcy and Elizabeth share insights into and amusement over behaviors of the British ton (high society.) In this story, Elizabeth's younger sister, Lydia, is led into grievous mischief by Wickham, a rival from Darcy's childhood, who infects her with his obsession over games of chance. Elizabeth and her older sister, Jane, attempt to extricate her and so the story goes. Who will rescue their family from the impending scandal? Are the sisters doomed to lose the suitors their hearts desire? Don't miss this sweet, romantic variation to the classic. The characters are well drawn and engaging, the plot holds the reader's attention and is easy to follow, and the story is appropriate for any aged reader who enjoys sweet romance. I wish I could give it 4.5 stars! Note: After reading lots af Jane Austin fan club reviews of other adaptations and giving my own review additional thought, I decided that this book truly did deserve five stars. I'm trying in general as a reviewer, to be "stingier" with my ratings, since there does seem to be an inflation in these values, but truly "Darcy's Wager" is too close to a five star not to recognize it as such. My congratulations to Ms. Swan for a job well done!

Darcy's Wager: A Pride and Prejudice Variation

This story takes place in London beginning with Elizabeth trying to reach a book on a higher shelf beyond. Enter our tall, dark, and handsome gentleman, Mr. Darcy. When leaving Temple of the Muses, the famed book emporium, Elizabeth is pushed to the street when some street ruffian grabs her reticle. All of her purchases are unscathed, but one. Mr. Darcy helps her and picks up her packages. It is raining and Elizabeth is soaked, and Darcy takes her home. The evening of the ball brings Darcy and Bingley. Jane has a new suitor, a Viscount. When sitting down for supper, Elizabeth notices her two younger sisters disappear into the servants' area behind the scene of diners. Elizabeth follows and finds them in the butler's pantry with the silver. Lydia has been told not to gamble, but she doesn't think that signing a water is a bet. When caught, her wager was to bring Wickham two pieces of silver in exchange for her IOU. When Elizabeth goes through the wall entrance, Darcy follows her. Lizzy confronts Wickham and pleads with him to release Lydia from the wager. Par normal, Wickham is the slimy cad he is portrayed as in most variations. Darcy sees her coming from behind the Palm tree decoration a bit later than Wickham. He told Elizabeth he'd give her the IOU if she'd introduce him to Georgiana. When Georgiana Darcy along with Mrs. Annesley wander into the music room, they meet Elizabeth and Wickham. Georgiana has never been told of Wickham's treachery so when she gets home relates the entire story. No Darcy is furious with Elizabeth for introducing the two, but that was the second assignation between her and Wickham. At the Assembly, Wickham takes the first dance from non other than Darcy. Desperate, Elizabeth goes to a money lender. Bingley sees her and returns her to Gracechurch Street. As things go from bad to worse, Elizabeth feels she cannot face this problem alone and finally tells Darcy what is going on, and Jane plans to the Viscount's proposal when he asks when she loves Bingley. The group goes to Vauxhall Gardens and when Lydia sneaks away to join Wickham's group of scum. Mrs. Bennet faints and is carried inside, and when Darcy and Elizabeth, Bingley and Jane return, they find Georgiana is missing. Quickly searching after Lydia tells them what she heard, Elizabeth and Darcy go running through Lover's Lane. When they see her under the pavilion, they race to Georgiana. Elizabeth convinces Darcy to not fight a duel, and when Wickham stirs his anger, Darcy strikes out at Wickham. Wickham wants to wager the very thing that separated them years ago. If Darcy wins he get the IOU, if Wickham wins Darcy will have to give him a yearly stipend since he took away his rightful inheritance knowing that Old Darcy rewrote his will. When Darcy takes his shot against the swinging lanterns, you hear the gunshot and then you hear glass breaking. When Wickham takes his shot all you hear is the gun fire. Yelling that deserves another shot, Darcy tells him no, one shot was their wager. Fight ensues and Wickham sits on Darcy's chest and tries to strangle him Elizabeth comes and kicks him off, but as they start again Wickham is again going for his throat. Darcy remembers the Fork Friend vin his pocket that he bought off of a street urchin and yams it deep in Wickham's cheek. Wickham is taken away and jailed. The Bennets are leaving London this morning, and Elizabeth has not seen Darcy since the Gardens. Happy endings for many of the Bennet daughters.

The book for felting

the book to get for felting as you can see from the reviews...

Also, if you want to take it a step further with color and the balance of color...

This book is a great book to understand and enter into the market. I bought the whole series and read them from cover to cover. This is not for the advanced student, but the beginner.

I also think that fashion designers should have a thorough understanding of color theory, which is really not taught that much or well. It is also a very complex subject to learn and understand.

BUT!!!!!
There is hope!!!

While this book is for the textile artist, ALL artists should get it and is also has cut outs to use when choosing your colour palette whether it be for Fashion Design or Art.

A must have for your library

I am very new to felting and have been looking for a great in-depth book about the history and "science" of felting as well as examining different techniques and projects that would benefit a beginner who wants to learn or an advanced felter who wants to learn more. I think I've found it in this book.

Christine begins by talking about the history and traditions of felt making throughout the world, which I found fascinating, and discusses why some fibers felt... plant fibers alone, do not. Who new? ;)

The thing that initially sold me on this book (BTW, Thank you Amazon for your "Look Inside This Book feature) was the fact that she covers more techniques than most other books I looked at, like cobweb felting and nuno felting (which I have become hooked on). I admit I haven't finished reading the book as I couldn't wait to get started, but I constantly flip through and refer back to certain sections as I work. She gives wonderful tips and advice for people of all levels, like best ways to stand to reduce back pain when rolling out wet felt.

Bonus... as I came to discover, Christine has a shop, New England Felting Supply, here in Massachusestts, (about and hour and a half from my town) in Easthampton (western, Ma). If you are able to make the trip if ever in the area I highly recommend it... blew my mind away. In the front is a gallery with the most beautiful felt pieces, many of which are photographed in the book. In the back is the supply area, with roving of all colors, mats, needle felt supplies, books, kits... I could go on. The people who work there are wonderful... friendly and very helpful. I have only been once, but looking forward to going back. Oh, and they have a web site.. of course.

Bottom line... if your looking for a more extensive book with great info as well as projects to carry you through many levels of felting experience... I believe this could be the one.

Amazing book - substantial

This book is beautifully illustrated on substantial paper stock. The graphics are very well done. The book covers practicalities like proper posture while felt-making and watching out for creepy-crawlies in your wool. The techniques range from simple cord making to creating yardage for upholstery projects to making your own fedora. Up until now, the only felting I've done was the accidental machine washing of a wool scarf. I'm really looking forward to trying these techniques.

One caveat - if you are looking for a good reference for the popular craft of needle felting, you won't find very much here. There are only 3 pages skimming the topic. You might consider Indygo Junction's Needle Felting: 22 Stylish Projects for Home & Fashion for a better text on needle felting.

The book is easy to read and provides nice info on many of the common roadblocks to effective SOPs. I was expecting more on lessons learned about the use of graphics and symbols that would dramatically improve SOPs. This book will help folks that are being thrown into the fire of fixing poor quality SOPs that haven't been burned by them before.

About the Author
Russell Kolts, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist and professor of psychology at Eastern Washington University, where he has taught for the past seventeen years and has received numerous honors, including twice being named the Associated Student Body's Faculty of the Year. Kolts has authored or coauthored numerous books and scholarly articles, including The Compassionate-Mind Guide to Managing Your Anger and An Open-Hearted Life: Transformative Lessons for Compassionate Living from a Clinical Psychologist and a Buddhist Nun (with Thubten Chodron), and has pioneered the application of compassion-focused therapy (CFT) to the treatment of problematic anger. He is founding director of the Inland Northwest Compassionate Mind Center and regularly conducts trainings and workshops on CFT and compassion. Kolts has recently appeared in his own TEDx Talk, titled "Anger, Compassion, and What it Means to be Strong."

Foreword writer Paul Gilbert, PhD, is world-renowned for his work on depression, shame, and self-criticism. He is head of the mental health research unit at the University of Derby and author of The Compassionate Mind and Overcoming Depression.

The best introduction to CFT so far

This book is probably the most accessible and practical introduction available to Compassion-Focused Therapy. As Paul Gilbert (founder of CFT) says in the foreword of this book, CFT is actually not a “simple” therapy as its theoretical underpinnings integrate a rich variety of ideas and research (including evolutionary psychology, CBT, Jungian psychology, attachment theory and Mahayana Buddhism) and the clinical practice of CFT asks from the therapist a broad set of skills, from empathic micro-skills to guiding visualizations. The prowess of this didactic and entertaining book is that it organizes this potentially daunting CFT theoretical framework and therapeutic skills into what Kolts presents as a set of layered processes and practices. These four layers include: the therapeutic relationship as the context where compassion can be experienced and trained; an evolutionary and contextual understanding of the mind and the brain; the cultivation of mindfulness of one’s own motivations, thoughts, emotions, and behavior; and compassionate mind training through a variety of exercises and home practices. As a CFT trained clinician, I have found this way of organizing the practice of CFT very useful for myself and my clients, and I think it will also be very appreciated by future CFT trainees. Additionally, and in a very coherent manner, the author’s voice throughout the book is warm, friendly, and clear, weaving together key concepts, relevant research, practical exercises, and clinical vignettes, offering a lively idea not only of what this therapy is about but also how this therapy might “feel” as a therapist or as a client.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about compassion and bringing it as a core motivation in their clinical work.

The breadth and depth of CFT is captured here with an accessible structure for those interested in finding out more. Russel Kolts has a deep appreciation of the research that informs the theory while providing us with illustrations putting the theory into practice.

Important Work

This is a highly accessible introduction to compassion-focused therapy -- so clear that even a non-therapist like me can understand it and see how its concepts are applicable to work outside the clinic. At this historical moment, I cannot think of more important work than teaching people to overcome their anger, treat themselves and each other with kindness, and heal relationships and communities. This book is a path forward.
