Jann Rowland was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. He enjoys reading, sports, and he also dabbles a little in music, taking pleasure in singing and playing the piano. Though Jann did not start writing until his mid-twenties, writing has grown from a hobby to an all-consuming passion. His interest in Jane Austen stems from his university days when he took a class in which Pride and Prejudice was required reading. Acting on Faith is his first published novel, but he envisions many more in the coming years, both within the Pride and Prejudice universe and without. He now lives in Alberta, with his wife of more than twenty years, and his three children.

Destroyed hopes of a family, blasted dreams of a child: 4.5 stars

7-29-16 Revised Review: due to accusations of giving away too much in my last review. My apologies. I took down my other review due to complaint of it being a synopsis not a review.

Jann Rowland will count it a success when readers are too angry to write their reviews. Such emotions evoked by the written word are a powerful force to deal with. I am seething, furious, boiling mad, and emotionally wrung out in my disgust with Mr. and Mrs. Bennet. Yeah, the words on the page provoked a mighty response within the breast of this reader. Excellent job Jann Rowland.

I suggest you read this powerfully written book for yourself.

This terrible book is more like a soap opera then anything resembling a Jane Austen story. There is an overabundance of histrionics, yelling screaming, and even from The Suite Miss Jane Bennet. Run as fast as you can from this book.

Implacable Resentment

I would probably have given this book a 4.5 if it were possible. On the one hand when you are writing fan fiction you need to be faithful to the spirits of the characters. That said there are only so many directions you can go at this point...the changes made to the Bennet family were rather dramatic but convincing. Bingley was himself only more decisive. Darcy lost his character completely. There was little Mr. Darcy in the story but if the author wanted to pull off the intense changes to the Bennet family he had to pull Darcy out of himself. Or to put it another way, both Bingley and Darcy were much more intuitive and on top of things. The rest of the characters were themselves. I did guess the outcome pretty early on....but I also enjoyed all of the twists and turns and would read other works from this author. I do recommend this book.

Great for youngsters

I found this book very helpful and informative for my kindergarten class. It is both simplistic enough for them to grasp the information and stay "engaged" as well as, complex enough for children to learn several attributes of a starfish...and remember it! There is also a great activity supplied at the end of the book. It's been a winner for me at home and at school. Great for beginners to science.

Jonah commutes to the bank by a combination of walking and streetcar, and we make that journey with him. The bank comes to life through your words, as do the people who work there. Jonah's boarding house is full of the kinds of characters that populated Americana novels of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and they are utterly believable. For me this novel recalls the writers of the urban landscape of the United States in that era, like Dreiser writing about Chicago in Sister Carrie. "You gave us two wonderful lead characters in Jonah and Reid. They leapt off the page at me, they were so wonderfully drawn. It was so easy to picture the buttoned-up Jonah, living his life through the day-to-day workings of the bank, and the charismatic Reid, infuriating poor Jonah with his easy-going ways and self-confident smile. I liked the fact too that Reid had a vulnerable aspect to his personality however and that Jonah was sensitive enough to be aware of it. Their burgeoning relationship was positively heartwarming to read, in fact the whole novel had a tremendous feelgood factor to it and I found the whole thing really uplifting."

Wonderful romance

REVIEW MAY BE SEEN AS HAVING SOME SPOILERS NOTHING MAJOR THOUGH

When I was a child I used to imagine that one day I will get to travel in the time travel machine to some of my favorite eras in the past to see for myself how people lived in those days. Of course I know now that this is not possible, but in a sense
this book for me had been a perfect substitute of the time travel machine. It transported me to another era. I felt that I was in the year 1888 in the city that gave me a second home, just as it gave second home to Jonah and Reid. I really loved this writer's another historical romance "Whistling in the Dark" and I would have been quite okay with this novel if her writing stayed at the level of "Whistling in the Dark", but in my opinion it improved so much. The settings seemed meticulously researched. It was so much fun reading about Jonah walking on the Wall street, or him and Reid taking a walk on Broadway and thinking about how much these streets changed from year 1888 to our time. Language is clear and easy to understand overall, but it definitely has historical flavor. You can see, feel and smell everything that is taking place around you.

Jonah Woolner had been an assistant cashier in the New York Bank for the last fourteen years since he was nineteen years old.

His life and his work are basically the same thing, he lives and breathes according to the rules he thinks banker should follow. He is hoping to be promoted to the cashier since he had been doing this work for months, but when our story begins

Jonah learns that Board of Directors hired the newcomer Reid Hylliard as the cashier instead. Jonah is upset and jealous, he of course keeps his jealousy to himself (mostly anyway) and out of loyalty to the bank he decides to stay instead of quitting. However his style of work seems to clash every day more and more with with Reid's innovative changes he is bringing to the bank. Reid seems to be happy go lucky individual who charmes bank's staff very fast and Jonah is one person who takes Reid the longest time to win over.

I thought that tension between Jonah and Reid was masterfully maintained throughout the book, even when they seemingly started to understand and like each other better it was like watching one step forward and two steps back dance. Of course
Jonah is the one whose insecurities, jealousy and mistrust feed into the tension, since Jonah does not have the complete information of what had been happening around him. Here is just one example of their delightful banter:

"Reid stood, meeting him eye to eye, seemingly in all seriousness. "You may be as forward as you like"
"Taken aback, Jonah regarded him warily "I may?"
"I'd prefer it."
"Well, then" " A morning coat is not a frock coat."
A morning coat is a compromise."
"Compromise?"
"Between dressing respectably for the bank and looking as though he spends his saturday evenings with a book and glass of port."
"No, better to convey, I suppose that he spends his evenings at the dancive hall, consorting with the women of uncertain virtue."
"You might benefit from an evening like that"
"I daresay you would think so"

Having just called their banter delightful, I should clarify that Reid is the one who is trying to lighten up their conversations and I have not always liked that. Oh as we get to know him, we see that the man is really genuinely charming and kind and just as zealously devoted to his job as Jonah is devoted to his, but I felt in the beginning that he was dismissive of Jonah's very real hurt.

I loved how both guys are portrayed as genuinely and very realistically good people, but also having some real flaws. Jonah is really a sweetheart, who treats other people as decently as he can manage, but he did forget for a while that pedantical and proper way to live and work is not the only way to live and work and he is *very* jealous of Reid initially. As proper gentleman he keeps it mostly bottled up inside, although as I mentioned above it definitely shows in the restrained way in some of their conversations and daily work :)

Reid is also a good person, but I got a vibe from him that he thinks he knows better than anybody else how to handle unforeseen "complications" and thus when Jonah resists, he does not always proceed in a way which is the most considerate of
Jonah's feelings.

I also liked how the story did not revolve around protagonists' angsting about them preferring to be with men. Oh it caused them some heartbreaks and painful breakups with family members, of course it did and they are aware of the need to be cautious, but they are first and foremost professional men, who just happened to prefer to sleep and fall on love with other men. While Jonah at some point refers to their sexuality as their limitations, overall they seem to accept who they are. I really liked it.

I liked how when even they are together Jonah still admits to himself and Reid that hurt is still lingering there for some time, that the fact that bank promoted an outsider still bothers him, even though he grew to trust and like Reid. In other words I liked how the change in his feelings and disposition proceeded at such slow pace. It felt extremely believable. And I liked how supposedly so self confident Reid does need assurance of how Jonah feels about him too.

I found it extremely amusing and a testament to the writer's skill that despote several hints througout the book I could not foresee that last 20% of the book or so turn from quiet romance to action/adventure of the sorts. I found it extremely fitting and properly foreshadowed when I was looking back, but I did not see it coming at all.

Enchanting and delightful, as usual.

I loved both Tamara Allen's previous novels (Downtime and Whistling in the Dark) so I knew I had to get this. (And now that I've read all three I can't choose a favorite. They're all quite brilliant.) Jonah is such a fussy character, but oddly charming, and I immediately found myself feeling very protective of him. Reid is everything that Jonah is not - outgoing, charismatic, and spontaneous - yet he clearly cares for Jonah. I cheered for them as a couple with what I can only imagine was a very sappy grin on my face. Then their sweet romance is interrupted and, as the previous reviewer stated, the last quarter or so is quite thrilling. I found myself turning the pages much too quickly, my heart in my throat. What a fantastic read - completely satisfying, romantic, and delightful. I absolutely adored this.

Both of Allen's previous novels "Whistling in the Dark" and "Downtime" are superbly written and richly plotted. This third book lives up to those, and offers the lucky reader a new experience to savor, emotionally as well as literarily.

In the world of m/m romance, Tamara Allen is one of the rare few (along with Alex Beecroft) who can pull off a historic setting and do it with near perfection. Her use of language, her research into historical detail, and her ability to create a romantic atmosphere that works for a modern reader without imposing anachronistic details or attitudes - all of this is impressive, and clearly has earned her a devoted readership.

I'm not sure how many of her readers are men - so I'll make it clear that I am. I'm also a museum curator, and my specialty is the Gilded Age. I'm the annoying person who critiques movies like "Gone with the Wind" because they don't get the Civil War period right. The point being that Allen can write an historical novel and make it sing AND ring true. Jack Finney's famous "Time and Again," did it really well, and Caleb Carr's "The Alienist" also did...but neither of these best-selling authors exceeds Allen's skill. And, of course, neither of them was a gay romance.

Allen draws out emotional tension as well as Jane Austen did, if for different reasons. Reid Hyllier and Jonah Woolner are characters that are authentic in every way, and I fell for them just the way I was supposed to. In some ways Allen's writing is really speculative fiction, in that she writes about something (i.e. men in love with men) that was never written about at the time...but nonetheless existed...it's powerful to be able to give that a voice that doesn't sound like "today," and allows the reader to fall into the fantasy of "what if...?"

Great way to learn!

I recently wanted to brush up and improve on the conversational Spanish I learned in junior high school (way back in the Dark Ages of the 1960's.) This is a really easy and interesting way to do that, even if you've never had any Spanish instruction before. You can download the entire text (complete with audio) from the CD that comes with the book and follow along through each lesson as it's read to you by native speakers. The interactive format allows you to highlight passages, bookmark your location for the next time, easily page through the text, and have the audio on or off at your choosing.

I've found that following along with the text as it's being read to me helps me stay focused, since I tend to be a "skimmer" sometimes. Hearing the speakers correctly pronounce the Spanish words is a major plus also. And there is always the book itself to refer to when you can't be on the computer. All in all a good approach to learning a foreign language. Mr. Fernandez would be proud.....

Awesome book, but accompanying CD is ...

This is a wonderful book for learners who are just starting to study Spanish. I wish I knew about this book four years ago when I became interested in learning spanish for the first time. I probably would have become fluent in Spanish by now!
What I enjoy most is the CD-ROM that comes with the book, except that it is a bit fast. It would have been good if the narrators spoke moderately slower than normal spanish conversational speed. It would also have been a good idea to include one dialogue in each chapter, first spoken in normal conversational speed, then repeated more slowly.
I am still enjoying the book!

a good buy

I bought this books in the hope of learning spanish - a language I am fascinated with. It is a good book as a guidance, to take you step by step through the language BUT it definitely needs extras. Don't rely just on this book, you will be lost. you need to buy a dictionary and a few other grammar and pronoun etch books to accompany it. Once you do, it is a very good guide and helpful enough.

About the Author

Prof. Olfa Kanoun received the Dipl.-Ing. Degree in 1995 from the Technische Universität München and the Ph.D. degree in 2001 from the institute for measurement and automation at the Universität der Bundeswehr München in Germany. She was awarded from the Commission of Professors in Measurement Technology (AHMT) in Germany for the best dissertation in 2001. In 2004 she founded the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Chapter within the IEEE Section Germany. Since 2007 she is professor at Chemnitz University of Technology in Germany leading the chair for Measurement and Sensor Technology (MST). In 2008 she founded the International Workshop on Impedance Spectroscopy (IWIS). Her main research fields are: Impedance spectroscopy, sensors, measurement systems and energy harvesting.

More good Transformers stories from across the pond.

I have to admit this will probably be in the lesser half of the UK books for me, but it's still great.

This volume starts off with its best stories, The Icarus Theory & Dinobot Hunt. As the introductory text points out, the Icarus Theory has some nice references to the Marvel Universe (Roxxon Oil & the Daily Bugle), and sets up Furman's most epic story yet, Dinobot Hunt. It was awesome seeing seldom used characters like Windcharger get a decent spotlight. We then go on to a group of stories that I'm sorry to say, are most likely my least favorite of the color stories (apart from the Christmas ones); Robot Buster, Devastation Derby & Second Generation. Don't get me wrong they are pretty good, just not favorites. My least favorite part was how Sparkplug turned to the Autobots for help & then treated them like he did before. I thought he was maybe going to start liking them. Still, considering the conditions Furman had to work with its quite remarkable he managed to churn out such a decent story. But then it's back to quality stories with the second best story in this volume, In The National Interest. I have to admit it's a great story, but to be honest I didn't like the ending. I know it had to be that way for the sake of keeping the continuity of the US series, but it was still a bit of a downer. To make up for that all of the stories in the Annual are good this time, especially Victory. The text stories were also a lot more interesting than the ones in the last volume, especially State Games. Though I did find Optimus Prime's use in the story to be a bit odd, but I can always pretend it's someone else.

So like I said this wasn't as good as the first volume but it was still good. But next volume, we'll witness the beginning of what is for me (& many others I'm sure) the peak of the UK comic, & it will last until volume 6 at least!

IDW's collections of Transformers Classics UK are awesome. They are a must for any Transformers comics fan! The quality of the paperback and paper stock is good. The pages are not the glossy stock most comics and tpb's are the quality is still good and fits with the 80's style. But the extras are what make it worth it. Many times when a comic is reprinted and/or collected there isn't many extras included (except maybe cover reprints). So having in-depth articles, etc make it accessible for fans (such as myself) who wouldn't normally know all the cool little bits of info. and funner to read the stories because of it! The extras include in-depth articles with Simon Furman and others about the history of Transformers UK and each story. Plus there are adverts, covers and other bonus reprints.

A great saga

While the Transformers US stories in the 80s are better read by fans of the time or hardcore younger fans, the UK storyline cna be read by anyone!!
You do not need to be a Transformers fan to appreciate the brilliant storyline (most written by now famous author Simon Furman), or the truly gorgeous art of these British products.
Even as the comics switched to digital coloring in this volume (let's not forget the use of watercolours in some of their earlier stories), they still managed a brilliancy of colours and a quality that never deplenished.
Add to that all the explicative pages that give the hardcore fan scrumptious behind the scenes tidbits or the novice a great explication of the Transformers lore and culture.
A great sci-fi saga to newcomers, a perfect gem to fans.

good [cheap] SEO advice

Must the book insist on writing Joomla with an exclamation mark? It rapidly gets old. While the people branding Joomla might like the emphasis, it can come off as just pretentious. It also clutters up the narrative. The best analogy is those books that use trademarked terms and append a copyright symbol after each such term. But having said that, the virtues of VirtueMart are clearly enunciated by the book. It appears simple to install on top of the default Joomla 2.5.

Nice also to see that VirtueMart takes into account your needs for Search Engine Optimisation [SEO] from the start. So you can enter metadata like keywords about your pages. An entire chapter is devoted to numerous SEO suggestions. Much cheaper than hiring an SEO expert, at least for the first iteration of your website. This may be the best value section of the text for some readers.

There is also ample provision for filling out custom fields for your products that are to be advertised on your website. This extends to such items at the tooltip or the title of the item. The book warns that the multiplicity of options can seem daunting. But in practice you can start with only filling in a few with your custom choices. VirtueMart is trying to anticipate the needs of many varied online stores.

The book proffers advice on making a backup of your VirtueMart site. The suggestions in this section of the text really could be applied to any CMS website. Take heed and do not omit doing the backups regularly.
